Lalich powers Hounds to sweep in home opener

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy softball team (20-6) celebrated its first home date of the season with a sweep of in-region Ohio Dominican Wednesday, 7-2 and 4-3.  Sophomore Natalie Lalich homered in both ends of the doubleheader while also driving in the tying run with a double in the Greyhounds' comeback win in game two.

GAME 1
Lalich started the day with a home run in her very first trip to the plate – a solo shot to lead off the second.  The Greyhounds eventually batted around in the frame, plating three runs to take the early lead.  Erika Goodwin and Casey Williamson each had an RBI in the inning, while Jessie Noone had a double.

UIndy added three unearned tallies in the next inning to take full control.  Consecutive singles from Sammy Beckwith, Noone and Cassie Reed conspired with two Dominican errors to put the home team up by a cool half-dozen.

Junior ace Morgan Foley did her thing for five innings, holding the Panthers (4-20) to a single unearned run while striking out seven.  Fellow-junior Coryn Tirpak got the final six outs, allowing one hit and one unearned run in the seventh.

Goodwin reached base in all four plate appearances, amassing two singles, two walks and two ribbies.  Noone, Reed and Katie Kelly also had two hits each.

GAME 2
After trailing all game, the Hounds scored three big runs in the sixth inning to earn the 4-3 come-from-behind win.  Back-to-back bunt singles from Sydney Russell and Williamson set the table, while base hits from Taylor Russell (single), Lalich (double) and Noone (single) plated one run apiece.

Starter Sammy Hogan ran into some early trouble, but Tirpak came on the toss 4 1/3 of one-run ball before Foley (15-3) notched her second win of the day by pitching two scoreless frames.

Lalich finished 3-for-3 in the capper, including another second-inning bomb, her fifth of the year.

The Greyhounds will attempt to play doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis this weekend.  First pitch from Kenosa, Wis., is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. ET Saturday.
