SOMERS, Wis. – The 12th-ranked UIndy softball team (22-6, 9-1 GLVC) recorded a pair of road wins at Wisconsin-Parkside Monday, downing the host Rangers by scores of 11-0 and 4-2. The highlight came in game one when 11th-year head coach
Melissa Frost recorded victory No. 400 as the Greyhound skipper, becoming the first coach in program history to reach the milestone.
A four-time GLVC Coach of the Year, Frost has led the Greyhounds to seven consecutive postseason berths, including the program's only NCAA Division II Championship appearance in 2009. She owns a career coaching record of 471-229-1 (.673) including a 401-175-1 (.696) mark at UIndy.
GAME 1The Hounds received a combined shutout from pitchers
Morgan Foley and
Sam Hogan. Foley (16-3) issued a season-high six walks but allowed just two hits – both singles – while fanning eight in five innings. Hogan, meanwhile, retired the Rangers (4-19, 0-10) in order in the sixth and final frame.
Offensively, the Greyhounds jumped on their hosts with three runs each in the first and third innings. Senior
Taylor Russell singled and scored in both frames, while freshman
Jessie Noone blasted her first colligate home run with a three-run shot in the third.
Russell finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs; Noone added three hits and sophomore
Natalie Lalich drove in three.
GAME 2After scoring an unearned run in the first, the Hounds found themselves down 2-1 heading into the sixth. Russell came up big in each of the final two innings, however, scoring the tying run in the sixth and driving in the game-winning tallies in the seventh. She scored on Noone's RBI knock in the sixth stanza, then went yard an inning later, scoring herself and
Erika Goodwin with the go-ahead runs.
Noone again had a pair of hits, as did junior
Jenny Thompson. Senior
Sydney Russell added a single and a stolen base.
Foley (17-3) got the win in the circle, tossing the final 3 1/3 innings of the day. She surrendered a two-run double in the fifth but was otherwise effective.
Junior pitcher
Coryn Tirpak started the game, keeping the Rangers scoreless for 3 2/3 IP.
The Hounds have a quick turnaround as they return to Baumgartner Field to host in-state Saint Joseph's Tuesday, Mar. 31 at 3 p.m.
