INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy swept visiting Saint Joseph's by scores of 5-2 and 8-0 Wednesday afternoon, improving to 8-2 at Greyhound Park and 8-1 over the last nine games.
GAME ONE: UIndy 5, SJC 2The Greyhounds (12-10, 10-4 GLVC) scored once in both the first and second innings to open the doubleheader.
Anthony Asalon drove in
Colin Hawk for the game's first run, and Hawk delivered an RBI himself in the second to make it 2-0.
Asalon again came through for UIndy in the fourth, driving in a two-out, two-RBI double deep to right center field.
Brady Thomas followed with a sharp single to center that brought Asalon in, making it 5-0.
Saint Joseph's (9-13-1, 5-7-1) finally got to UIndy starter
Jake Sprinkle in the fifth, scoring a run to cut into the Hounds' lead.
The Hounds were held scoreless for their final four at-bats, but the UIndy pitching staff of Sprinkle plus relievers
Dylan Stutsman, J.T. Terwilliger and
Brett Collins were able to limit the Pumas' offense, as well.
The visitors made a late push in the top of the ninth, scoring a run credited to Terwilliger, but Collins came on to record the final two outs and preserve the win.
Sprinkle (4-0) picked up his team-leading fourth winning decision, tossing seven innings while allowing five hits and just one run. The freshman righty found himself in the stretch early and often – SJC put the lead runner on in five of his seven innings – but he avoided any major damage to secure the victory.
Asalon finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Hawk and
Zach Jacobs each finished 2-for-4 at the dish.
GAME TWO: UIndy 8, SJC 0Starter
Connor Mailloux (1-3) – making his first appearance since Mar. 22 – was stellar on the mound for the Greyhounds, pitching a three-hit complete game shutout. He faced only three above the minimum en route to his first winning decision of the campaign.
The Greyhounds again struck first, scoring a run in the opening inning of Wednesday's closer. After reaching on a walk and working to third base, Hawk scored on a lofty RBI single from
Sean McCracken that just escaped the reach of the Puma defense.
UIndy put up a three-spot in the fourth inning and officially broke open what was originally a close game.
Luke Andrade drove in Jacobs with a RBI single, and
Trevor Forde brought in both Andrade and
Blake Richardson later in the frame to make it 4-0.
The Hounds went back to work in the fifth, as McCracken and Andrade each delivered RBI singles to increase UIndy's lead to 6-0.
For good measure, two more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth. The Pumas bungled a double play attempt, allowing Forde
Daniel Lee and Forde to score on an errant throw, making it 8-0.
McCracken, Jacobs and Andrade each recorded multiple hits for the game, and seven different Hounds contributed the eight runs.
The Greyhounds will travel this weekend to face Southern Indiana in Evansville for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
