UIndy baseball splits doubleheader at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – UIndy baseball split Saturday's doubleheader at Southern Indiana, winning 11-7 before falling 8-0.

UIndy's performances were poles apart, as the Greyhounds (15-11, 11-5 GLVC) racked up 11 runs on 16 hits in the opener before tallying just a single hit in their subsequent shutout loss to the Screaming Eagles (8-14, 5-11).

GAME ONE: UIndy 11, USI 7
The Greyhounds broke the bats out early and often against the defending national champions in the series opener, defeating USI 11-7. UIndy scored eight runs in the first four innings alone, powered by a pair of homeruns from Sean McCracken and Daniel Lee.

UIndy hung three runs on USI starter Tyler Nichols in the top of the first inning. Colin Hawk led off with a double, and was promptly driven in by Anthony Asalon. McCracken later smacked a two-run homer to make it 3-0 early.

USI responded with a four-run bottom of the frame, tagging Greyhound starter Matthew Kaplanis (4-0) with four hits to take a 4-3 lead.

Hawk scored again in the second inning on a wild pitch, briefly tying the game before the Eagles' Kyle Kempf hit a two-run dinger to give USI a 6-4 lead.

Back-and-forth the teams went, and with one swing of the bat Lee reclaimed the leads for the Hounds. Zach Jacobs led off the inning with a single, and Blake Richardson walked to put two on base. Lee followed with a three-run bomb to left center, his third homer of the year, giving UIndy a 7-6 edge.

McCracken again delivered in the fourth, hitting a RBI single to score Brady Thomas.

UIndy continued to rake in the sixth, scoring two more to make it 10-6. McCracken's third hit of game – a double to left – brought home Thomas again, and Jacobs followed with a RBI single.

For good measure, Jacobs upped the Hounds' lead in the top of the ninth, scoring on a RBI single from Richardson.

McCracken finished a triple shy of the cycle, driving in four while hitting his team-leading sixth homer. Jacobs went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI, and Thomas finished 3-for-4 while scoring twice.

Despite being roughed up a bit himself, Kaplanis picked up his fourth winning decision of the season. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits – both season highs – but struck out five batters and got plenty of run support to earn the victory.

GAME TWO: USI 8, UIndy 0
After their resounding offensive outing in the series opener, the Greyhounds were utterly stifled in the seven-inning affair following. USI's junior starter Alex Holder threw a one-hitter in a complete-game shutout, helping the Eagles win 8-0 to even the series.

With two outs in the third inning, Richardson hit a single through the right side on a full count, marking the only base knock the Hounds managed all game. Holder allowed just the lone hit and one walk while striking out eight.

Reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week Jordan Tackett took the mound for the Greyhounds, but got into trouble in the second inning. USI took advantage of a bases-loaded, no-out situation, coming through with five runs before UIndy recorded three outs.

Tackett was replaced by Adam Cornwell in the inning, and Cornwell tossed 3.1 innings giving up four runs (just one earned).

Hamilton Carr drove in four runs to lead the Screaming Eagle offensive effort.

The two squads meet for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. ET Sunday to wrap up the four game tilt.
