EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team fell 3-1 and 1-0 Sunday at Southern Indiana, dropping the four-game conference series 3-1 overall.
The Greyhounds (15-13, 11-7 GLVC) recorded just seven hits total, as Southern Indiana (10-14, 7-11) got back-to-back complete game gems from its starting pitchers.
GAME ONE: USI 3, UIndy 1 (7 inn.)Southern Indiana's Matt Chavarria (3-2) tossed a three-hit complete game in the seven-inning opener, helping the hosts win 3-1. He struck out eight Greyhound batters and gave up no earned runs while picking up the winning decision.
USI was on the board first, scoring two runs in the opening frame against UIndy's 
Jake Sprinkle. The Eagles had five consecutive singles on the Greyhound righty to bring in the pair of runs, but Sprinkle limited the damage and stranded three runners on base.
The Greyhounds scored their lone run in the top of the second, as 
Zach Jacobs – who reached on a fielding error – scored on 
Daniel Lee's sacrifice fly.
USI added another run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, making it 3-1.
UIndy managed just two hits across the final five at-bats, unable to plate another run against Chavarria.
Sprinkle (4-1) tossed the entire game for the Hounds, giving up three runs (two earned), seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
Anthony Asalon had two of UIndy's three hits, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish.
GAME TWO: USI 1, UIndy 0 USI's Ben Wright (1-4) one-upped his teammate by tossing a four-hit, nine-inning complete game shutout in the series finale. He finished with three strikeouts and no walks, and allowed only one Greyhound baserunner to reach scoring position.
UIndy also turned in a stellar pitching effort, as Hawk, 
Connor Mailloux and 
Brett Collins combined to allow just one run. Hawk (0-1), making his second appearance of the season, went four innings and gave up the lone USI run in the bottom of the third.
Mailloux came in to throw three innings of no-hit relief, striking out two, and Collins finished with one inning out of the bullpen.
Trailing 1-0 heading to the ninth, UIndy's 
David Gunst led off with a pinch-hit single. But Wright foiled any comeback attempt and ended the game by getting a double-play ground ball from Asalon.
Jacobs was 2-for-3 for the game, and 
Brady Thomas went 1-for-3.
UIndy travels to Owensboro, Ky., for a midweek game at Kentucky Wesleyan Wednesday, April 8.
