INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy Sophomore
Jordan Tackett threw a no-hitter Saturday as the Greyhounds swept a doubleheader against visiting McKendree by scores of 3-2 and 5-0.
Tackett's no-no came in the seven-inning 5-0 victory following the series opener, and is the first no-hitter for UIndy since Phil Wheeler completed the feat in the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
GAME ONE: UIndy 3, McKendree 2If not for Tackett's gem, UIndy's
Matthew Kaplanis would have had the headline performance on the bump, as the senior junior picked up his fifth win in the Hounds' 3-2 win.
The Greyhounds (17-13, 13-7 GLVC) got on the board first, scoring a pair on
Daniel Lee's two-run homer to left field in the second inning. The Australian native's fourth dinger of the season scored
Blake Richardson, who had reached on an infield single, and gave the Hounds an early 2-0 lead.
Kaplanis (5-0) was strong start to finish, and even had a no-hit shutout through three, but was tagged for two in the top of the fourth. McKendree's first hit came in impressive style – Bearcat first baseman Zach Klockowski hit a towering two-run home run off of the ARC past the right field fence to tie the game at 2-2.
After a few scoreless innings UIndy crossed the plate again in the bottom of the sixth.
Sean McCracken led off with a triple to center field, and
Zach Jacobs followed with a RBI single to left to reclaim the lead for good.
UIndy would hold onto its slim 3-2 lead, keeping the Bearcats off the scoreboard for the final five frames. Kaplanis picked up his team-leading fifth win of the year, tossing seven complete innings allowing only two hits and two runs. He struck out six batters and walked three.
Connor Mailloux pitched a one-two-three eighth inning before
Brett Collins came on in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
McCracken, Jacobs and Richardson each finished with multiple hits for the Greyhounds, who out-hit the visitors 9-3 in the series opener.
GAME TWO: UIndy 5, McKendree 0 (7 inn.)Tackett – who's already earned GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors once this season – set himself up for another nod with a stellar no-hitter in the second game of the series.
The Indianapolis native thanked his offense for helping him close out the game with relative ease.
"I actually felt more relaxed because we had a five run lead," Tackett noted. "But the adrenaline started flowing on that last out."
Ahead 0-2 in the count, Tackett punched out McKendree clean-up batter Jake Kline to seal the win and prompt a total Greyhound celebration on the mound.
"They tried to rip my jersey off," Tackett said. "I got a hug from each guy. It was exciting."
Tackett (3-3) has had a self-prescribed "inconsistent" season, with two early losses followed by consecutive wins and the conference honor, but he was able to make an early adjustment following the first inning Saturday to remain a step ahead of the Bearcats.
Plus, he had his entire repertoire at his disposal. When asked what was working on the mound, Tackett replied, "Everything."
"I was able to put everything where I wanted to. I was also getting a lot of swings and misses on my fastball high."
All told, UIndy's four pitchers Saturday held the Bearcats to a remarkable .064 (3-for-47) batting average in two games.
Offensively, the Greyhounds were led by Jacobs and
Alex Ritchie, who each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the finale. Jacobs finished 4-for-7 to increase his team-high batting average to .367.
Lee again tallied two RBIs, pacing the Hounds' offense with four of their six total RBIs Saturday. Â
