INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy racked up 20 runs and 21 hits Sunday, powering past McKendree by scores of 7-5 and 13-3 to complete the 4-0 series sweep at Greyhound Park.
GAME ONE: UIndy 7, McKendree 5 (7 inn.)The visiting Bearcats got on the board first in Sunday's opener, totaling as many hits (3) and runs (2) in the opening inning as they managed in both games Saturday.
After three scoreless innings, UIndy came through with a big five-run fourth, taking a 5-2 lead on three hits and a pair of McKendree errors.
Sean McCracken led off with a double deep to right center, and later moved to third when
Alex Ritchie reached on an error.
Luke Andrade walked to load the bases, and
Daniel Lee brought in the first run with a single to right field.
Back-to-back textbook bunts from
Trevor Forde and
Colin Hawk brought in two more, bringing the lead to 3-2, and a costly throwing error on the next at-bat allowed two more runs to cross and make it 5-2.
In the top of the sixth the Bearcats cut into the deficit on a solo homer from John Tolliver, but in the bottom of the frame the Hounds answered. With two outs and a runner on base,
Brady Thomas smoked a no-doubter over the fence in left to make it 7-3. It was the junior's second home run of the season.
McKendree added two runs on reliever
Brett Collins in the seventh, but he was able to eventually close the door to seal the victory for UIndy.
Starter
Jake Sprinkle (5-1) picked up his fifth winning decision of the year, tossing five innings while striking out four and walking none.
McCracken went 3-for-4 at the dish with two doubles to the lead the Greyhounds, and seven different Hounds scored the seven runs.
GAME TWO: UIndy 13, McKendree 3 (7 inn.)With a run-rule agreement in place prior to the game, UIndy completed the series sweep in resounding fashion, dropping the Bearcats 13-3 in just seven innings.
An 11-run second inning powered the rout, as the Greyhounds nearly batted around twice while racking up seven hits and four hit batsmen. The big blast of the frame was
Colin Hawk's grand slam that made it 6-0 Greyhounds. It marked the third homer for the Cincinnati transfer on the year, and served as ample run support for his own cause on the mound.
Blake Richardson delivered three RBIs total in the frame – first a single that scored McCracken and next a double that brought home
Alex Ritchie and Jacobs. Andrade drove in a pair of runs on two different at-bats and Ritchie had a two-RBI single.
Anthony Asalon and
Storm Joop added RBIs later in the game to bring UIndy's run total to 13 – the most in any game this season. To attest to UIndy's offensive balance, 10 different Greyhounds delivered the 12 base knocks while 10 separate Hounds also scored the 13 runs.
Hawk (1-1) started his second game on the mound in the series finale, throwing five scoreless innings while striking out four batters.
Mycah Whetstone,
Scott Mitchell and
Jonathan Bowen each saw action in relief to help close out the game.
UIndy will travel to face in-state and GLVC East rival Saint Joseph's Tuesday. The Greyhounds swept a doubleheader against the Pumas back on April 1 at Greyhound Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET
