Greyhounds split doubleheader at Saint Joseph's

RENSSELAER, Ind. – UIndy baseball split a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's Tuesday, falling 2-1 before defeating the Pumas 12-8 in extra innings.

The Greyhounds (20-14, 16-8 GLVC) swept the Pumas (17-17-1, 11-12-1) in a doubleheader back on April 1 at Greyhound Park.

GAME ONE: SJC 2, UIndy 1
Saint Joseph's won a pitchers' duel in Tuesday's opener, narrowly edging the Greyhounds 2-1 in seven innings.

Saint Joseph's Zachary Aring and UIndy's Connor Mailloux (1-4) each went at least six innings and totaled six strikeouts, while giving up only six hits and three runs combined.

The Pumas were on the board in the second inning when Jacob Bigos hit a two-out RBI single, making it 1-0 in favor of the home squad.

The Greyhounds were held hitless for the first three innings, and carried just one hit into the sixth frame until Brady Thomas smacked a solo home run to even the score at 1-1.

After giving up the one run in the second, Mailloux settled in and kept the pumas off the board for four straight innings. In the bottom of the seventh, after retiring the first two batters, the UIndy sophomore walked back-to-back batters. The Hounds went to the bullpen and called in Brett Collins – UIndy's leading arm out of the pen – but his outing didn't last long. The first batter he faced, Matt Skrzypiec, singled in the game-winning run.

The 2-1 win was Saint Joseph's third consecutive walk-off victory, as the Pumas walked off both games against Bellarmine Sunday.

GAME TWO: UIndy 12, SJC 8 (11 inn.)
UIndy ensured the Pumas wouldn't walk off for a fourth consecutive game in Tuesday's closer, dropping SJC 12-8 in 11 innings. The Hounds hung five on the Pumas in the top of the 11th to break open a back-and-forth game.

The Greyhounds wasted no time scoring first, plating a run in the first inning on Zach Jacobs' RBI single that scored Anthony Asalon.

UIndy added four more in the second frame on three hits and a SJC error. Luke Andrade first scored on a throwing error by the third baseman, and Thomas later delivered a double down the right field line that brought home two. The next batter, Sean McCracken, triple to right center to make it 5-0.

Saint Joseph's had an answer, scoring three on two hits in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Pumas then tied it up in the fifth, scoring twice on UIndy reliever Dylan Stutsman.

After another RBI from Thomas in the top of the sixth, Saint Joseph's took its first lead of the game in the bottom half. Two Greyhound errors helped the Pumas score twice to claim a 7-6 edge.

UIndy's Jim Wujcik, pinch running for David Gunst, scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to even the score at 7-7.

The Greyhounds finally broke through for the big 11th inning, scoring five runs on just one hit, aided by three Puma errors and four walks. Bryce Aldridge drove in one run with a RBI single, and with the bases loaded Brendan Dudas brought in another by drawing a walk.

Aldridge later scored on a balk, and Dudas and Joop each scored unearned to increase the lead to a comfortable 12-7.

Collins (3-1) was again called upon out of the bullpen, and the versatile reliever went 5.2 innings allowing only six hits and one earned run. He struck out seven batters, including four in the 9th and extra innings to earnt the winning decision..

Thomas finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs, totaling four during the doubleheader. UIndy's top three batters in the lineup (Colin Hawk, Asalon, Thomas) went a combined 7-for-14 and each scored a run in the 12-8 victory.

Pinch-hitter/third baseman Storm Joop scored a pair of runs, but the other 10 came from 10 different Greyhounds.

UIndy will head south to face former GLVC-member Kentucky Wesleyan for a nine-game affair tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.
