Softball ends weekend with split vs UIS

INDIANAPOLIS – The 10th-ranked UIndy softball team (30-8, 17-3 GLVC) finished a four-game homestand this weekend with a doubleheader split versus Illinois Springfield at Baumgartner Field Sunday.  After sweeping McKendree yesterday, the Greyhounds blanked the Prairie Stars, 6-0, in the opener but endured a 1-0 near-miss in game two.

GAME 1
Coming off her first no-hitter of the season, Foley held the Prairie Stars (25-15, 12-10) without a base knock until the sixth inning, breaking a stretch of 12 hitless innings for her opponents.  The no-hit bid was broken up by senior Lauren Hollinshead's single.  In all, Foley struck out 14, including each of the game's first seven batters, on the way to her fifth shutout of the year.  She was pulled after six in favor of junior Coryn Tirpak, who finished the game with a scoreless seventh.

Taylor Russell carried the load offensively.  Her opposite-field dinger plated four runs in the sixth, good for her second grand slam in as many weeks.

A Natalie Lalich single in the first inning and a bases-loaded walk by Sydney Russell in the sixth accounted for the other two RBIs.  The Greyhounds had multiple base runners in all both one inning.

GAME 2
After getting the starting nod again, Foley (23-4) was the tough-luck loser in game two.  The Louisville, Ky., product went the distance, fanning nine and allowing just one hit and one unearned run, but the Stars' lone tally held.

That run came in the third when two errors and two hit batsmen conspired against Foley and the Hounds.  Hollinshead reached on an error, stole a base and went to third on another miscue.  She eventually crossed with what proved to be the game winner on a squeeze play.

UIndy tried to muster rallies in both the fifth and sixth frames but came up empty.  Cassie Reed attempted to score from first on Katie Kelly's two-out double in the fifth, but a pair of good throws from the outfield beat her to the plate.  Later, Erika Goodwin's leadoff double in the sixth went for not when she was stranded at third.

UIndy remains at home to play third-ranked Missouri St.-Louis Saturday, April 18.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon ET.  Stay tuned to UIndyAthletics.com for schedule changes.
