INDIANAPOLIS – The 10th-ranked UIndy softball team (34-8, 19-3 GLVC) celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Maryville Friday evening. Sandwiched between wins of 5-0 and 3-2, the Greyhounds honored seniors
Amanda Ciran,
Sydney Russell,
Taylor Russell,
Jessica Vleck and
Casey Williamson.
Â
The senior quintet has contributed to a lofty .827 winning percentage, highest in program history for any four-year span. Also, the group needs just three more victories to surpass the school record of 184 wins in a four-year stretch.
Â
GAME 1UIndy received home runs for T. Russell and Williamson while getting a combined two-hit shutout from
Morgan Foley and Ciran on the way to the 5-0 win in the opener.
Â
Russell's two-run bomb plated sister Sydney to get the Greyhounds on the board in the fourth. Two innings later, Williamson led off the sixth with a line-drive shot to extend the lead.
Â
Taylor and Vleck scored the final two runs for the Hounds. Russell walked and scored on an error, while Vleck beat out a bunt single and later crossed on a
Jenny Thompson sac fly.
Â
Foley (25-4) was once again brilliant in the circle. The NFCA Player of the Year candidate limited Maryville to just two hits – both singles – while fanning six in six scoreless innings.
Â
Ciran got the call in the final frame and spun a hitless seventh in her first action in a conference game this season.
Â
GAME 2Unlike the first game, the Hounds fell behind in the capper. The Saints (12-27, 8-16) scored the first tally of the game without a base hit, using a hit batsman, a stolen base and two sacrifice bunts to push across a run.
Â
Later, a solo homer from Sheridon Sprague put the visitors up 2-0 through four innings.
Â
The Greyhounds managed a three-run fifth inning, however, to ultimately earn the "W". Sophomore third baseman
Katie Kelly started the rally with a leadoff single. After a passed ball put her on second, S. Russell delivered an RBI knock up the middle to score Kelly and put the Hounds in the scoring column.
Â
Williamson issued the game-winning blow one batter later, as her second home run of the day cleared the center field netting to put the home team up by one.
Â
Maryville would later position the potential tying run at third but could not close the deal.
Â
Junior
Coryn Tirpak (5-4) got the pitching win, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing two runs. Foley came on in the sixth to compete the four-out save.
Â
Saturday proves to be a big day for the Hounds. UIndy hosts No. 3 Missouri-St. Louis in a top-10 showdown starting at noon ET. The Tritons (37-3, 22-2) are the only team ahead of the Greyhounds in the GLVC standings and in the latest regional rankings.
Â
The probable starters for game one will be a pair of All-Americans, as Foley will go toe-to-toe with UMSL's ace Hannah Perryman.
Â
In addition, UIndy is holding its annual Alumni Day Saturday and will welcome back a number of former players to Baumgartner Field.
