Greyhounds push win streak to eight games behind twinbill sweep at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Winners of eight in a row, the UIndy baseball squad appears to be firing on all cylinders as the end of the regular season nears. Four home runs and a pair of complete games lifted the Greyhounds (30-17, 24-10 GLVC) past Lewis (21-24, 15-19) in Friday's doubleheader, increasing UIndy's lead in the GLVC East Division.

GAME ONE: UIndy 7, Lewis 1
The Greyhounds hit three homers and Matthew Kaplanis spun a one-run complete game to lift UIndy past Lewis in the opener, 7-1.

The home squad got on the board first, getting a RBI single in the bottom of the second to take a narrow 1-0 edge.

Kaplanis (8-0) wouldn't allow another run the remainder of the game, and even surrendered just one hit across the final seven frames. The junior ace retired 21 of 23 batters during those innings, stifling the Flyers' offense.

UIndy was held scoreless through four, but in the fifth used a pair of homers to take its first lead of the game. With two outs already on the board, Alex Ritchie delivered his first dinger of the season to tie the game. After Luke Andrade singled to keep the inning going, Daniel Lee smoked his fifth home run of the year to make it 3-1.

Colin Hawk added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Anthony Asalon and Brady Thomas each delivered RBI doubles in the seventh to make it 6-1.

For good measure, Hawk added a solo homerun in the eighth to bring the lead to 7-1.

Kaplanis' final line was nine innings pitched, giving up four hits, one run and a walk while fanning six.

Asalon, Thomas and Ritchie each finished with multiple hits, and six separate Hounds crossed the plate to score.

GAME TWO: UIndy 8, Lewis 0 (7 inn.)
Despite going 0-for-5 in the opener, Sean McCracken righted the ship with a massive outing in the nightcap. He went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs – including a grand slam – helping UIndy win 8-0.

On the mound, Jordan Tackett (5-4) went all seven innings while holding Lewis scoreless. He gave up just four hits and struck out six.

The Hounds got on the board with two runs in the first, getting RBis from Asalon and McCracken to make it 2-0.

UIndy quickly widened the gap in the second, scoring six runs on just three hits and a Lewis fielding error. The big blast of the inning came with two outs and the bases loaded. McCracken took a 0-1 pitch over the opposite field fence, marking his team-leading eighth homer of the season to make it 8-0.

The outing lowered Tackett's season ERA to 2.47, and was his third win in his last four starts.

Jacobs finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, and Thomas and Lee each went 2-for-4 with a run.

The two squads meet Saturday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the final conference series of the season. The Greyhounds' final regular season game is scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. at Oakland City.
