INDIANAPOLIS – In one solid 3-0 sweep against visiting Maryville the UIndy volleyball team both snapped a five-match skid and won their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.
The Greyhounds (3-7, 1-0 GLVC) won by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21 against the Saints (4-5, 0-1), holding the visitors to a mere .128 hitting percentage – the lowest of any UIndy opponent this season.
Junior
Becca Lira was a big part of the defensive effort, racking up six block assists and nine digs to go along with a team-high 11 kills. Junior
Shelby Ruffner totaled five block assists, helping the Hounds finish with eight blocks as a team.
Maryville hit just .028 in the opening set, allowing the Hounds to take an early 1-0 match lead. Sophomore
Kacee Salyers paced UIndy with four kills, and freshman

UIndy led the majority of set two, but a late Saints run gave the visiting squad a late 23-22 edge. It appeared Maryville was poised to even the match 1-1 – and continue UIndy's rough patch in second sets – but out of a timeout the Hounds scored three consecutive points to win the set.
The Greyhounds finished off Maryville with a 25-21 win in set three, getting four kills apiece from Lira, Ruffner and freshman
Sarah Skinner.
Freshman
Katie Voelz finished the win with eight kills on a .467 (8-1-15) attacking mark, adding three block assists. Junior setter

The Hounds will look to build a win streak Saturday at 3 p.m. against Missouri-St. Louis in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
