All-around effort lifts Hounds to road win

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The University of Indianapolis football team earned a convincing 38-7 road win at Hillsdale College Saturday night behind a stellar team effort. The Greyhounds (3-1) racked up a season-high 542 yards of total offense while holding their hosts scoreless for the final 51 minutes of play in the key region win.

Senior Reece Horn had another monster game for the Hounds. The Carmel, Ind., native racked up 10 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead to move into second in the program's all-time career reception list.

Despite a rough start to the night, UIndy pulled away from the host Chargers (1-3). A missed field goal and an interception deep in their own territory conspired to put the Hounds in an early 7-0 hole, but Indianapolis zipped ahead for good with 38 unanswered points.

After pinning UIndy at its own five-yard line midway through the first quarter, the Chargers took advantage of the precarious situation when sophomore linebacker Jay Rose stepped in front of a Connor Barthel pass and took it to the one. Hillsdale cashed in with a successful quarterback keeper by C.J. Mifsud to give Hillsdale the initial lead.

The miscue marked the year's first turnover for the Hounds, who had come into the game as one of only two Division II teams without a giveaway on the season.

It was all Hounds from there, however, as UIndy generated nearly 300 yards of total offense in the first half alone. Kicker Brad Schickel got the Greyhounds on the board with a 29-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the first quarter, and Horn hauled in both of his TDs in the second to cap a pair of lengthy drives and put the Hounds up 17-7 at the break.

Early in the third, the UIndy defense delivered one of its many stops on the night, forcing and blocking a 46-yard field-goal try. Senior Lee Campbell got paw on the kick, while junior Jamie Placht took it 33 yards the other way to give the Hounds great field position.

On the very next play, Barthel found a steaking Tuwan Payton down the seam for a quick 38-yard strike. The versatile back finished his night with 104 all-purpose yards – 71 rushing and 43 receiving.

The UIndy's running back tandem accounted for the final two TDs, with Payton adding a second score on a goal-line push from the one and Andrew Walker breaking off a 53-yard gallop – the longest rushing play for a Greyhound this season.

Up 31 heading into the fourth quarter, UIndy took its foot off the gas by putting in the No. 2s and almost exclusively running the ball. Freshman Shakir Paschall gained 40 rushing yards on 10 fourth-quarter carries, while redshirt-freshman and QB-of-the-future Jake Purichia saw his first collegiate action under center, completing his only two passes, both to Collin Timmons.

Middle linebacker Derrick Bryant once again topped the team with nine total tackles to go with a pass breakup and a QB hurry. Mike Hamilton and Cole Sigmund each had eight tackles, with the latter garnering his first career start at linebacker and also becoming the third Greyhound in as many weeks to record his first career interception.

Barthel finished an efficient 23-of-29 passing for 297 yards and a season-best three touchdowns. Walker notched his second consecutive 100-yard game with 111 yards rushing.

UIndy returns to Key Stadium Saturday, Oct. 3 to host Truman State in its annual Homecoming contest. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. ET.

Note: Coaching staffs from both teams took part in the Coach To Cure MD initiative, a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). The coaches wore special patches in an effort to raise Muscular Dystrophy awareness and money to fund research for a cure.
