Hounds fall to Miners in four sets

ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis volleyball team (4-9, 2-2 GLVC) suffered their second GLVC defeat in less than 24 hours on Saturday afternoon, falling in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15) to the Miners of Missouri S&T.

The Greyhounds hit only .166 on the afternoon and were done in by 27 errors on the day. Freshman Sarah Skinner set a new season-high with a match-high 14 kills on 41 attempts. Junior Becca Lira was the only other Hound to reach double-figures in kills with 12. Shelby Ruffner led the Greyhounds with a .375 hitting percentage.

After trailing for much of the first set, the Greyhounds grabbed their first lead of the game thanks to three consecutive points to make it 20-19. But the Miners would take six of the final eight points to earn the set, 25-22.

Missouri S&T took the first four points of the second set, but the Hounds would respond to draw even at 10. The two teams would go back and forth on points until the Miners rattled off four straight points to take a 21-17 lead. UIndy would close the gap to one on two occasions before the Miners closed it out with a 25-23 win.

UIndy took advantage of four Miner errors to open the third set on their way to a 7-2 lead to start the game. Missouri S&T would slowly chip away at the lead before tying things up at 22.

A Lira kill and a Miner error put the Hounds at match point, but Missouri S&T would answer with the next two points to tie the set. UIndy would hold off the comeback thanks to a kill from Kacee Salyers and a Miner attack error to close out the set.

The Greyhounds had their best offensive set of the day in the third game, hitting .333 with 16 kills.

But the Miners would close things out one game later, taking advantage of a Greyhound attack that hit only .053 in the final set while recording a .343 hitting percentage of their own.

Natalie Wichern served up 41 assists for the Greyhounds and added 13 digs, tying with freshman Libero Bri Heffernan for the team lead. Salyers added 11 digs for the Hounds and finished with a pair of aces, matching Hailey Brown for tops on the team.

GLVC play continues for the Greyhounds next Friday, Oct. 2, when UIndy heads to Kenosha, Wis. For a meeting with the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
