INDIANAPOLIS – Behind a career night from senior receiver
Reece Horn, the University of Indianapolis football team (1-0) opened its 2015 slate with a 27-17 win versus visiting Saginaw Valley State University Thursday night. Horn's monster 13-catch, 241-yard performance highlighted the Greyhounds' comeback win against the in-region Cardinals.
A graduate of local Cathedral High School, Horn added a touchdown to his line while setting a new GLVC single-game record in receiving yards. His efforts also moved him up to fourth in the UIndy annals in career receptions (177).
Â
Despite outgaining Saginaw Valley (0-1) by nearly 100 yards in the first half, UIndy (1-0) found itself down 10-6 at the break. However, the Hounds punted just one time in the second half while finding the end zone on three occasions.
Â
The season's first score came from an unlikely source when true freshman
Shakir Paschall got his number called midway through the third quarter. After a couple of failed goal-line rushes, the 5-10, 230-pound Carmel, Ind., native punched it in with a one-yard plunge on his very first collegiate touch, giving the Hounds their first lead of the game.
Â
Following a Cardinal punt, UIndy managed a 12-play, 87-yard drive that spanned the third and fourth quarters and ultimately proved to be the turning point. Horn's skills were on full display during the series, as the 6-foot-3 target made catches of 19 and 28 yards before drawing a pass interference call and later capping the drive with a seven-yard touchdown grab.
Â
Making his first career start, sophomore running back
Andrew Walker punctuated the evening with a one-yard touchdown run that put the Hounds up three scores with just three minutes to go. He finished with 50 yards rushing on 17 carries, while his backfield running mate,
Tuwan Payton, managed 57 yards on 16 attempts.
Â
Senior QB
Connor Barthel finished 23-of-31 passing for 304 yards, one touchdown and zero picks.
Defensively, a pair of Greyhound linebackers amassed a game-high 12 tackles in
Derrick Bryant and
Rob Dury. Junior defensive lineman
Sam Daggy recorded the team's lone sack, while junior corner
Korey Rogan was credit with two pass break-ups.
Â
Meanwhile, sophomore
Brad Schickel recorded his first two career fields, both coming in the second quarter.
Â
Up next for the Hounds is the team's first-ever meeting with crosstown Marian University. Dubbed the Monumental Matchup, the game with take place on Marian's St. Vincent Field on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.
