Offense stalls for 20th-ranked Greyhounds in 77-65 loss at Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – An inefficient offensive performance doomed the 20th-ranked UIndy Greyhounds in a 77-65 loss at Drury Thursday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

Playing on the road for the first time since Nov. 28, the Greyhounds (10-3, 4-1 GLVC) had their league-high nine-game win streak snapped after posting season lows in points and field goal percentage (.385). But perhaps the most telling stat was UIndy's three assists – the fewest UIndy total since Feb. 9, 2012 against Northern Kentucky.

"That's very disappointing," Head Coach Stan Gouard told WICR afterward. "We're a better passing team. That tells me that we hold the ball too much, and there are too many guys thinking 'I' not 'we'."

Drury (9-5, 4-2) kept the Hounds in check for the full 40 minutes defensively, and countered by shooting an even 51 percent overall while converting 20 of 24 free throws.

The Panthers grabbed an early lead, and saw it swell as the Hounds hit a field goal drought that lasted more than six minutes late in the first half.

Near the end of that slump, Drury's Lucciano Gamiz sank a 3-pointer to make it 32-18, the largest Greyhound deficit of the night up to that point.

Senior Jordan Loyd had a quick answer for the Hounds, converting back-to-back 3-pointers to pull them back within 35-29.

But UIndy eventually went into the half down 39-29, shooting just 30 percent overall and 4-for-16 from 3-point range.

Loyd continued to keep UIndy afloat in the second half, scoring 16 of his game-high 25 points while hitting four 3-pointers, but Drury matched the Hounds bucket for bucket down the stretch to seal the victory.

Gouard commented on the Greyhounds' inability to chip away at the deficit, saying, "I remember the last media, we're down ten points, and I told my guys, 'Look at the clock, now look at the scoreboard. We're down ten.' There were only about three or four stops we needed, and we kept trading baskets the rest of the way."

Indeed, the Panthers shot 60 percent in the second half, and got 14 points from Kameron Bundy after the team's leading scorer was held without a point in the first period.

Loyd's 25 points led all scorers, and the senior guard set a new career high with six triples. He added a team-high seven rebounds and one steal in 34 minutes.

Senior Tyler Rambo was the only other Hound in double figures, finishing with 13 on 5-for-8 shooting to go along with four boards and three steals in 31 minutes off the bench.

Drury had four finish with at least 14 points, led by Joshua Palmer's 15 on an efficient 7-for-10 field goal clip. Drew Moore pulled in a game-high 12 rebounds, and Gamiz led the Panthers with three steals.

"We've got to have amnesia," Gouard noted. "We as coaches have to move on, and the players have to do the same thing. When we step foot in that gym in Rolla, Missouri, tomorrow our focus has got to be on winning the next one."

UIndy looks to start a new win streak Saturday against the Missouri S&T Miners. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
