Greyhounds ride monster third quarter to notch first conference road win of the year

ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team had to fight off a fourth quarter rally to pick up their first conference road win of the year on Saturday, knocking off Missouri S&T, 60-56.

Senior Princess German turned in yet another dominant performance on Saturday, leading all scorers with 27 points. Sarah Costello added 14 and Nicole Anderson chipped in with 12 for the Hounds, who held on to improve to 4-12 on the year, 2-4 in GLVC play.

Janie Arand and Bria Pierce had 13 points each to lead the way for the Miners, who dropped to 5-9 on the year and 1-6 in conference play.

"We fought hard and we were able to win what was a game of runs," Head coach Constantin Popa said. "We attacked and pushed the ball hard in the third quarter and that proved to be huge for us. That gave us a cushion to take into the fourth and it ended up being a major factor in the win. Road games in the GLVC are always tough and today was no exception. When you can get a conference road win, you take it and it was great to see our team battle today."

After a three from Costello to open the game, the Miners rattled off a quick 7-0 run to take the lead. Leading 9-8 at the first media timeout, the Miners extended their lead to as many as 10 points as UIndy managed just one bucket over the final 4:31 of the first quarter. After 10 minutes, the Hounds found themselves in an 18-11 hole.

With the offense sputtering, the UIndy defense stepped up in a big way in the second quarter, holding the Miners to just 1 of 7 shooting to open the quarter and start an 11-2 run that put UIndy ahead 21-20 after a pair of German free throws with 2:32 left in the half.

The two teams combined for a pair of ties and two lead changes before the end of the half with the Hounds taking a 26-25 lead at the break after a German three-pointer right before the halftime horn.

The seesaw battle continued between the two teams to start the third quarter but an 11-0 Greyhound run over a nearly five minute stretch gave UIndy a 42-32 lead with 2:35 left in the period. German proved to be the catalyst for the UIndy offense in the third, scoring 10 of the team's 21 points, helping the Hounds take a 47-36 lead after 30 minutes.

Just as they had done on Thursday night, the Greyhound offense struggled in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for the first 5:22 of the final from, allowing the Miners to climb back into the game. An 8-0 run brought the hosts back to within one possession, but UIndy would get momentum back after a German layup followed by a three from Devin Ferguson to make it a 52-46 game with 2:54 to go.

The Miners refused to go down quietly, eventually cutting the Greyhound lead to 57-56 with a three-point play with 29 second to go. After Anderson made one of two free throws the next time down the floor, the Miners had the final possession with a chance to win. They couldn't get the trying or go-ahead bucket though, turning it over with just six seconds to go. Two German free throws at the other end sealed the win for UIndy.

UIndy shot just 33.3 percent (16-for-48) from the floor, knocking down 9 of 33 three-point attempts and 19 of 26 tries from the line. The Hounds held the Miners to 36.7 percent (18-for-49) from the floor, including just 3 of 12 from deep and 17 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Both teams yanked down 31 rebounds with Anderson's seven leading the way for UIndy. The Hounds held a slight 15-14 edge in the turnover battle but cashed in for 19 points of Miner mistakes as opposed to just 12 for Missouri St.

The Hounds wrap up their current three-game road trip on Monday night, heading to Rensselaer, Ind. for a showdown with GLVC traveling partner and rival Saint Joseph's. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
