Loyd scores 29, Greyhounds dismantle Prairie Stars 103-77

INDIANAPOLIS – For a full 40 minutes Thursday night the UIndy Greyhounds torched the visiting Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars, resulting in a resounding 103-77 victory in front of hundreds of fans in Nicoson Hall.

UIndy (13-3, 7-1 GLVC) quite literally dominated every facet of the game, whether it was the 39-for-71 shooting (55 percent) on offense or season-high 13 steals on defense.

According to Assistant Coach Aundrey Wright, it was the total team effort that propelled the Greyhounds.

"We got contributions from everybody; we've been getting that the last couple games where everybody pitched in," he told WICR following the win. "We shared the ball offensively and played with a little sense of urgency on the defensive end, and that's what gets us going on the offensive end."

Jordan Loyd put together a remarkable offensive performance, hitting 11 of 17 shots, including five 3-pointers. In just 27 minutes, the senior guard totaled 29 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Illinois Springfield (7-11, 1-7) hung with the Hounds for the first several minutes of the game, despite needing a pair of long threes late in the shotclock to do so. When Paxton Harmon sank one of those with 10:59 on the clock, UIS was down just 23-17.

That's when UIndy hit the acceleration.

The Hounds tore off a dazzling 18-0 run that covered a five-minute span, in which they went 8 of 13 from the floor and forced eight turnovers (six steals), utilizing their full-court pressure to maximum effect. The Prairie Stars managed only five shots during that span, and missed them all.

UIndy closed on a 39-14 run that left the halftime score at a resounding 62-33, the most points the Hounds have scored in any half this season. Loyd led the way with 20 first-half points, and as a team the Hounds racked up 21 points off of 14 UIS turnovers.

The second period was much more evenly matched, as the Greyhounds shot an even 50 percent (17 of 34) compared to the Stars' 58 percent (18 of 31), although the outcome was never in doubt.

UIndy led by at least 25 the entire final period, and reached a 38-point lead at the 7:53 mark – its biggest over any opponent this season.

The Greyhounds finished the game with 30 points off of 19 UIS turnovers, recording 13 team steals.

"Guys paid attention to the scouting report, and we took them out of some of the stuff they wanted to do; we kind of sped them up," Wright said. "We knew by doing that we would force some turnovers, and we were fortunate that guys were able to convert on those turnovers."

Senior Tyler Rambo was second on the squad with 14 points, hitting 5 of 7 and all four free throw attempts. He also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Sophomore Alex Etherington and freshman Jimmy King each followed with 13 points, knocking down five field goals apiece. Etherington also totaled two blocks defensively.

Junior Ernest Maize had four points, four rebounds and four highlight-reel-worthy blocks, and senior Lucas Barker finished with seven points, five assists, three boards and three steals. Barker's five dimes pushed him past the 300-assist mark at UIndy - just the 11th player in program history to reach that number.

"We constantly tell our guys in the locker room that we're not playing against whoever's name is on the other jersey, we're playing against ourselves," Wright said. "We want to be better, especially next week against Bellarmine and Southern Indiana. We just want to continue to get better at this point in the season and let things fall where they may."

UIndy returns to action Saturday, hosting McKendree for a 3:15 p.m. tip. The Bearcats are coming off a 79-72 loss at Saint Joseph's.
