Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kyle Piercy, Sports Information Director

Red-hot Knights down Greyhounds, 101-65

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UIndy men's basketball suffered a 101-65 defeat Saturday night at No. 11 Bellarmine, snapping a five-game win streak.

The Greyhounds (15-4, 9-2 GLVC) fell victim to the Knights' sizzling 67 percent shooting effort, including a 9-for-16 clip from long range.

"We didn't execute, especially on the defensive end," Head Coach Stan Gouard told WICR afterward. "These guys can shoot the ball. They spread us out, and really moved the basketball well."

After scoring a season-high 113 Thursday night, Bellarmine (17-3, 10-1) – which entered the week fourth in the nation in field goal percentage – picked up where it left off, shooting 71 percent in the opening half to jump out on top.

The Knights wasted little time taking advantage of early turnovers and foul trouble from the Greyhounds, knocking down 10 of their first 14 shots to race out to a 22-12 lead by the under-12 media break.

UIndy bounced back later in the half, helped in part by an 11-5 run that saw the Hounds hit five of six and force five BU turnovers.

But the Knights were relentless, and ended the period on a 16-6 burst to take a sizeable 54-34 lead into the half. Bellarmine sank 20 of 28 shots in the first 20 minutes, including 6 of 9 from 3-point land. The hosts also outrebounded UIndy 17-10.

The Hounds shot a solid 46 percent in the first half, but went just 3 for 10 from deep and couldn't keep pace with the red-hot Knights.

A 13-0 BU run immediately out of the break all but spelled the end for the Hounds, who fell behind 67-34 and never quite pieced together any lengthy scoring runs of their own.

UIndy was led by senior Joe Retic, who scored 16 of his team-high 18 in the second half, and also had two steals and two boards.

Senior Tyler Rambo and sophomore Alex Etherington each finished with 11 points and three steals, and senior Lucas Barker recorded seven points and six assists.

Not only did Bellarmine shoot over 67 percent from the floor, but the hosts also went 22 of 24 from the foul line and outscored UIndy 40-24 in the paint. UIndy finished 36 percent overall, but only 7 for 26 from 3-point range.

The 36-point margin is the largest in the storied series between the two programs, surpassing a 97-63 Bellarmine victory in 1992.

"We have to stay positive," Gouard noted. "We'll go back as a team and watch the game, but once those guys jumped out of the gate quick we never adjusted."

Gouard continued: "We'll bounce back, we lost to a really good basketball team tonight."

UIndy will return to action next Thursday, Feb. 4, to host Quincy. The Hawks and Hounds will tipoff at 7:45 p.m. ET in Nicoson Hall.
