25th-ranked Greyhounds edge Maryville Saints in GLVC thriller, 82-75

INDIANAPOLIS – As the clock dwindled in a back-and-forth game against the visiting Maryville Saints, the 25th-ranked Greyhounds looked for answers on the offensive end.

Enter Jordan Loyd.

The 6-3 senior guard scored 15 of the final 18 points for the Hounds, helping the home squad escape with an 82-75 victory in Nicoson Hall.

After a slow start by his lofty standards – just seven points on 2-for-6 shooting in the opening half – Loyd finished with 27 points, knocking down 7 of 14 from the floor and 11 of 13 at the foul line.

"Jordan (Loyd) wanted the ball in his hands down the stretch," Head Coach Stan Gouard told WICR, following the win. "They switched a lot tonight and there were some times late that he recognized some mismatches and took advantage of them. He gave us a lot of energy late when he knocked down a couple big shots."

His effort in the final minutes helped UIndy solidify the win over the upset-minded Saints, who got a stellar 37-point night from sophomore Marvin Grant-Clark.

UIndy (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) got offensive production elsewhere, as well, getting double-digit contributions from sophomore Alex Etherington (16 points), and seniors Tyler Rambo (14) and Joe Retic (13).

Both sides were slow to start following the opening tip, but UIndy's defense forced the Saints (7-7, 1-3) to start 0 for 4 with four turnovers on their first seven possessions.

The Hounds built their lead up to nine at 29-20 when Retic converted a layup off a feed from Eric Davidson. But Maryville – as it did much of the night – had an answer. A 13-5 run saw UIndy's lead drop, and when the teams went into the break at half the Saints trailed just 36-33.

Grant-Clark, who netted 16 in the first half, was even more prolific in the second. He answered a 7-0 Greyhounds run with his own personal 7-0 run to knot the score at 45-45 with 15:21 remaining.

Minutes later, Maryville junior Damyan Stoyanov sank a 3-pointer from the left corner, giving the Saints a 51-50 lead – their first of the game.

That began the final stretch that featured 10 lead changes and six ties, and numerous momentum-shifting plays that brought both UIndy and Maryville supporters to their feet.

One such sequence came at the half's midway point. After grabbing a defensive rebound, Retic pushed the ball up the court and found Rambo, who proceeded to slam the ball home while being fouled. He completed the 3-point play at the foul line, giving the Hounds a 58-54 edge and perhaps enough momentum to run away.

A quick 6-0 Maryville run ended those hopes, and stretched into a 15-6 burst that saw the Saints grab their largest second-half lead at 69-64.

The Hounds weren't finished, however, and closed the game on an 18-6 run of their own – shooting 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Loyd provided the majority of the scoring, while the UIndy defense held Maryville to just 2 for 7 from the floor over the final four minutes.

"We made plays down the stretch tonight and get it done after not playing the way we wanted to through the first 35 minutes," Gouard said. "Tip your hat to Maryville, they did a great job with their execution tonight. But we wanted to play our tempo and we really didn't get into that rhythm until late in the game."

Loyd finished with 27 points, a team-high nine rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists, and despite a 3-for-10 start from the floor wound up shooting an even 50 percent (7-14).

Etherington's 16 points came on a 7-for-12 shooting effort, to go along with four boards, two steals and an assist. Rambo did much of his damage at the foul line, going 6 of 7 en route to 14 points, adding five rebounds.

"Tyler (Rambo) gave us some big minutes tonight, especially down the stretch at both ends of the floor," Gouard noted.

Along with his 13 points, Retic chipped in two rebounds, two steals and two assists. Senior Lucas Barker finished with five points, five boards, two assists and a block.

UIndy has a short turnaround before welcoming Missouri-St. Louis to Nicoson Hall Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
