INDIANAPOLIS – The 25th-ranked Greyhounds won their ninth contest in a row and improved to a perfect 4-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 79-68 victory Saturday against Missouri-St. Louis.
Seniors
Lucas Barker,
Tyler Rambo and
Jordan Loyd combined to score 48 for the Hounds (10-2, 4-0 GLVC), who shot an even 49 percent from the field while converting on 23 of 25 foul shots.
The Tritons (6-8, 0-5) provided a stiff challenge for a full 40 minutes, however, never allowing the Greyhounds to run away down the stretch.
After UMSL's Andreas Kefalas sank a pair of free throws with 3:08 remaining, UIndy's lead was just five at 70-65. The Greyhound defense locked down at that point, holding the Tritons scoreless for nearly three full minutes until a last-gasp 3-pointer fell.
When the clock showed zeroes the Greyhounds walked off with a 79-68 decision.
As they've done the previous two games, the Hounds started slowly on offense, connecting on just one of their first six attempts while falling down 8-2 early.
Coming out of the under-16 media break, UIndy flipped the switch and tore off a 16-0 run that led to an 18-8 advantage midway through the first half.
UIndy sixth-man
Tyler Rambo made his impact felt immediately during the opening period. He was a major factor in the Hounds' 16-0 run, contributing six points, a pair of assists and a steal during the stretch. In just 13 minutes of first-half action, Rambo finished with 10 points, five boards and three assists.
The Hounds carried a 40-30 lead into the locker rooms, outrebounding the visiting Tritons 23-7 during the first 20 minutes.
UIndy maintained the double figure lead for most of the second half, until a short 7-0 Triton run brought the score to 55-49 with 10:27 on the clock.
Loyd stopped that skid with a steal and fastbreak layup, getting the feed from freshman
Jimmy King.
The Greyhounds kept it a multiple-possession contest the rest of the way, closing out their ninth consecutive victory and finishing the recent six-game homestand a perfect 6-0.
Barker led the Hounds with 19 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Rambo tied a season-high with 17 points, going a perfect 9 for 9 from the free throw line while grabbing a game-high eight boards.
UMSL leading scorer Brandon Marquardt – the GLVC's leading 3-point shooter – was held relatively in check by the Greyhounds, going just 2 for 6 from long range.
After six games in a row at home, UIndy travels to meet Drury (Jan. 14) and Missouri S&T (Jan. 16) next week. The Hounds and Panthers will tip off at 8:45 p.m. ET Thursday night in Springfield, Mo.
