Â
INDIANAPOLIS – Following a tough defeat in their previous match, the UIndy men's soccer team knew that they needed to come out of Sunday's match with the Maryville Saints with another win in the standings.
Â
With the game tied in overtime, the Greyhounds got the win they needed courtesy of
Jake Meyer's first golden goal of the year to give the Hounds a 2-1 win in a critical GLVC showdown.
Â
GAME CHANGER
Meyer had come off the bench less than a minute before netting the game winner on a broken play in the Maryville box.
Josh Mahon sent a crossing feed in that deflected off bodies from both sides before winding up within Meyer's reach just inside the far post. The Cincinnati, Ohio-native had time to head the ball just across the line for his fourth goal of the year.
Â
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
-
Javier Steinwascher opened the scoring just 20 minutes in, taking a feed from
James Jenkins inside the Maryville box and firing a cross-body shot past Maryville goalkeeper Christian Kjaersgaard for his third tally of the year. With the helper, Jenkins also notched his first career assist on the play, extending his team lead in points to 11 (5G, 1A) on the year.
Â
- Maryville's Helmut Florencia evened things up in the 75
th minute after heading home a crossing feed from Sander Heiern. The goal came seven minutes after Florencia's attempt at a wide open net hit teammate Karlo Jingura and stayed out of the cage.
Â
-
Miles Palmer needed to make just two saves to earn his fifth win of the year as the Greyhound defense once again limited their opponent's scoring chances on the day. Shots were 14-10 Greyhounds while shots on target were 6-3 in favor of UIndy.
Â
-UIndy remains unbeaten in overtime this year, improving to 2-0-3 in extra time on the year.
Â
COACHES' CORNER
Head coach John Higgins: "I thought we were great in the opening half but it was another situation where we just kind of let our opponent hang around. Full credit to Maryville, they earned their goal in the second half and they played really well today. For our guys to bounce back and win again in overtime after giving up a late goal is a massive result for us."
Â
"We know it's not going to be easy these next few games against teams that have been quality teams in the GLVC for a long time. But we told the guys that we've got our destiny in our own hands and it's our chance to get hot and move up a few positions with the conference tournament drawing close."
