QUINCY, Ill. – UIndy volleyball suffered its second sweep in as many matches, falling by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21 to Quincy University Saturday afternoon in the Pepsi Center.
After claiming six victories in a row, the Greyhounds have hit a two-match skid that moves them to 12-12 overall and 7-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. UIndy is fourth in the East Division and in a tightly-packed group competing for a wild card in the upcoming GLVC Championship Tournament. Quincy improved to 15-10 and 9-4 in-conference.
One night removed from a thrilling come-from-behind win against Saint Joseph's, in which they rallied from down 0-2, the Hawks began Saturday's bout with a 25-19 victory in the opening set. Quincy hit .267 (18-6-45) while totaling 18 team assists. UIndy pulled within one point at 18-17, but the Hawks closed the frame strong with a decisive 7-2 run.
Despite looking poised to even the match at 1-1, the Hounds suffered a heartbreaking loss in the second stanza. UIndy led 18-13 at one point, but Quincy stormed back to take the lead, 23-22, and eventually claimed the set on a Greyhound service error.
The third set looked much the same, as the Hounds led 14-9 against their hosts in an effort to extend the match. But again the Hawks rallied, overtaking the Hounds and sealing the sweep in a 25-21 decision.
All told, the inter-divisional contest held 19 ties and 10 lead changes, but the Hawks managed to tally the timely points near the end of each set. Quincy hit .231 overall, including an efficient .300 (13-1-40) in the final frame.
UIndy managed just five team blocks, and after totaling only four in last night's defeat at Truman accumulated five or less in consecutive matches for the first time since losses to Cedarville (Sept. 13) and Missouri-St. Louis (Sept. 16).
Senior
Becca Lira and
Shelby Ruffner led the Hounds offensively with 11 kills apiece, and Lira added a team-high 18 digs. Ruffner's .333 attack percentage (11-3-24) was a team-high, raising her season clip to .268.
Sophomore setters
Maggie Gibson and
Remi Bowman recorded 20 and 15 assists, respectively, and libero
Kate Bontrager had 11 digs.
The tough road continues for the Hounds, who take a break from conference action to travel to face No. 5 Wheeling Jesuit (28-2) Tuesday night. First serve from the Alma Grace McDonough Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
