FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Former University of Indianapolis men's basketball star
Jordan Loyd was selected by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in Sunday night's 2016 NBA D-League Draft. The Indiana Pacers affiliate picked Loyd with the fourth pick in the third round, and 48th overall among 105 players taken.
Loyd enjoyed a successful three-year career with the Greyhounds after transferring from Division I Furman, finishing his career as UIndy's 25th all-time leading scorer. The 6-4 guard averaged 20.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his senior season, knocking down more than 50 percent of his shots and 86 percent of his free throws.
"First off I want to thank God for this unbelievable opportunity, and I want to thank my family for being there for me during this long, long process" Loyd said. "I'm really excited to get up to Fort Wayne and show that I am more developed than I was in college. I'm hungry, motivated, and I know I need to compete with a chip on my shoulder. Returning to Indiana is a dream come true, but I know there is still a lot of work to be done."
The Atlanta product was the second-highest Division II player selected in the draft, following former Daeman student-athlete and current overseas pro, Gerald Beverly, who was taken one spot ahead of Loyd.
"Jordan has worked very hard to get to this point in his career," said UIndy Head Coach
Stan Gouard. "He is well deserving of this opportunity and will serve our university and his new team well. Going into this draft I spoke with a number of teams about Jordan, hoping that Fort Wayne would draft him so he would remain in the Hoosier State. Jordan and I talked and he knows that this is an opportunity of a lifetime, and he has been preparing for this type of moment his entire life."
Along with Loyd, Fort Wayne selected Travis Leslie (Georgia), Adam Woodbury (Iowa) and Chris Fowler (Central Michigan) in last night's draft.
The Mad Ants, who are celebrating their 10th anniversary, begin the season Nov. 12 on the road in Greensboro, N.C. The first home game will be Nov. 20 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.
