Greyhounds fall at IU in final preseason tune-up

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In its final preseason exhibition, the UIndy women's basketball team made the short trek to Indiana University Sunday afternoon, battling the Hoosiers to an 87-58 final. Junior Martha Burse led the Greyhounds with 17 points, Sarah Costello followed with 10, while Sydney Brackemyre finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Hounds hung with the Hoosiers for much of the game, including matching them point-for-point in the fourth quarter, but a couple of big first-half runs from IU proved the difference. The Hoosiers, who are returning all five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's NCAA Tournament team, started the game with a 17-0 run and later ended the first half on a 17-4 surge.

In between, UIndy trimmed the lead all the way down to five early in the second quarter. Burse led the charge, scoring 11 points in the opening stanza while hitting five shots in a row to close the period.

Taylor Foster's triple to open the second quarter made it 26-21 IU, but UIndy would manage just seven more points the rest of the half. Nine of UIndy's 25 turnovers came in the second half, helping up the Hoosier lead to 53-28 at the halfway point.

The Hounds were out-scored by just four the rest of the way. Brackemyre powered the UIndy offense in the third quarter, scoring all nine of her points in the frame. The transfer from Louisville finished just one point and one board shy of a double-double.

One of a number of Greyhounds battling foul trouble, Costello came alive in the fourth quarter, draining a pair of threes while scoring 10 points in the final period. Devin Ferguson had a game-high four assists, Burse added three steals and Brackemyre two blocks.

Five Hoosier finished in double figures, including preseason All-Big Ten selection Tyra Buss, who went for 16 points, and sophomore Kym Royster led all players with 18.

The Greyhounds kick off the regular season at home Nov. 11. The Hounds will host in-region Findlay in a 5:45 p.m. tip.

NOTES
IU is led by former UIndy head coach Teri Moran. The reigning Big Ten Coach of the Year, Moran spent seven seasons with the Greyhounds from 2000-07, finishing her tenure with a 114-62 (.640) record. She guided the Greyhounds to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2002-03 squad that finished with a stellar 29-3 mark on the way to GLVC regular season and tournament titles.
