RENSSELAER, Ind. – For the second time this season the UIndy volleyball has swept in-state rival Saint Joseph's, winning Tuesday night on the road by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 26-24 in the Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse.
The victory is the Greyhounds' 30th in a row against the Pumas, extending a remarkable streak that began way back on Sept. 14, 2001. UIndy has now 90 of 99 sets played during that span.
More importantly, UIndy (14-14) picked up a crucial Great Lakes Valley Conference win, moving to 9-7 in league play with only two matches left on the schedule before the year-end conference tournament. The Hounds sit slightly ahead of Wisconsin-Parkside (8-8) and Bellarmine (8-8) for the East Division's third seed, with a match against Parkside coming up Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
Tuesday's opening set was a close one down the stretch, with six ties and four lead changes between the two sides. Junior
Kacee Salyers set the tone for the Greyhounds, totaling six points in a narrow 25-23 decision. Her kill from sophomore setter
Maggie Gibson on set-point capped a late 3-1 UIndy run to give the Crimson and Grey a 1-0 match lead.
The second frame did not feature quite as much drama, as the Hounds never trailed after grabbing an early 6-5 lead. UIndy led by as many as eight points at 17-9, and, despite a late Saint Joseph's push, went on to win 25-18. Salyers again put her fingerprint on the set's final point, spinning home a service ace to clinch the set. Â
Both teams hit above .400 during the second set, including a red-hot .533 (17-1-30) from the Greyhounds. Gibson assisted on 14 of those 17 kills, and Salyers led the way with another five kills on nine swings.
The third and final stanza was a battle between the Hoosier State rivals. After UIndy gained separation with a 20-15 lead, Saint Joseph's bounced back to tie the match at 24-24 following a 9-4 run. On the next point, Gibson delivered her lone kill of the night to set up match-point, and a subsequent block from middles
Teigan Flaws and
Shelby Ruffner ended the affair at 26-24.
Salyers led all individuals with 13 kills, adding 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Senior
Becca Lira totaled 11 kills and nine digs, and sophomore
Katie Voelz finished with nine digs, six kills and four blocks.
Gibson recorded 41 assists in the win, adding three digs and three blocks. Freshman
Mary Grace Ertel, wearing the libero jersey, had a career-high seven digs while seeing action in the back row.
UIndy wraps up the regular season on the road, meeting No. 18 Lewis Friday at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the crucial match at Wisconsin-Parkside the following day at 4 p.m.
