Greyhounds defeat Olivet Nazarene in final home game of the year

INDIANAPOLIS – In their lone home contest amid a nine-game road swing, the UIndy men's basketball squad treated fans in Nicoson Hall to an 85-62 victory against the visiting Olivet Nazarene Tigers.

The Greyhounds (3-5) displayed their wealth of balance on offense, as five individuals finished in double figures, including Tate Hall (18 points), Eric Davidson (17), Alex Etherington (12), Jesse Kempson (12) and Jimmy King (11). It marked the second time this season UIndy had five in double-digits (Nov. 13 vs. Lake Erie).

Defensively, UIndy forced ONU (2-8) to turn the ball over 21 times, leading to 32 points. The Hounds totaled a season-high 11 steals while keeping the Tigers to a season-low 62 points.

Despite a full week off from competition, the Greyhounds wasted little time finding an offensive rhythm, knocking down seven of their first 10 shots to grab an early 18-13 first-half advantage. Davidson led the charge with seven points.

The Tigers proved a tough opponent, however, keeping in step with the Hounds for most of the opening 20 minutes. It wasn't until a 23-9 run shortly after the under-eight media break that UIndy created any real separation on the scoreboard, but that stretch – fueled by a perfect 3-for-3 mark from long range – saw the Hounds take their biggest lead of the game at 46-30.

Seven individuals scored during the 23-9 run, led by Etherington's pair of 3-pointers. The Hounds also sank all six free throws in that span, finishing the half 9 of 11 from the stripe.

UIndy connected on 55 percent (16-29) overall in the first half, and carried a 46-34 advantage into the locker rooms at intermission.

The Tigers hung around during the opening portion of the second half, using a 10-2 run to cut the Hounds' lead back down to single digits, 60-51 with 12:25 left. But it was short lived, as the Hounds scored 21 of the next 28 points to balloon their lead up to their biggest of the afternoon at 81-58.

All told, UIndy finished over 50 percent (28-55) overall from the field, including a lofty 68 percent (19-28) within the perimeter. Led by D.J. Davis' five dimes, the Hounds totaled 18 assists on 28 makes.

Aside from their exceptional ball movement, the Hounds' biggest factor was their ability to get to the charity stripe. UIndy sank 20 of 24 free throws, the second-most attempts taken in a game so far this season. Of their 85 total points, 56 came either in the paint or at the free throw line.

Hall's 18 points led all scorers, as the freshman southpaw hit 8 of 9 freebies and added four rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Davidson followed closely with 17, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers and all four free throw attempts. Fellow junior Etherington was a factor on both ends of the court, finishing with four boards, three assists and two steals to accompany his 12 points.

"It was a must-win for us," Assistant Coach Bryson Davis-Johnson told WICR afterward. "Coach (Stan Gouard's) message to the team has been 'the season's not over', the season is just getting started, but this was must-win. Looking ahead we've got to get three (wins the rest of the month), but you can't get three without getting one, so now we have to go to Florida and take care of business."

UIndy will head south to meet two members of the Sunshine State Conference, facing Nova Southeastern Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET, and Barry Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
