Sharks capitalize in OT, defeat Hounds 82-78

DAVIE, Fla. – Despite tying the program's single-game record with 18 3-pointers, the UIndy men's basketball squad dropped an 82-78 overtime decision Friday night against Nova Southeastern.

The Greyhounds (3-6) saw a 10-point second-half lead vanish, but a miraculous 3-pointer from junior Ajay Lawton late in regulation sent the game into an extra session. The Nova Southeastern Sharks (3-6) escaped the OT period victorious, however, using an 8-0 burst to seal the win.

UIndy got off to a frigid start offensively, missing their first nine shots while turning the ball over four times. That cold spell allowed NSU to take an early 11-0 lead.

The Hounds bounced back, dissecting the Sharks' zone defense to pull off a lengthy 16-2 run while grabbing their first lead of the game. Consecutive 3-pointers from Jesse Kempson and Alex Etherington capped the run, as UIndy led 19-13 near the nine-minute mark.

The Crimson and Grey held their lead the rest of the half, but the home side chipped away down the stretch to make it just a 32-30 game at intermission.

UIndy continued its hot shooting in the second, knocking down three early triples to force a Nova Southeastern timeout before the first media break. Etherington's second three of the night made it 44-34, the Hounds' first double digit lead of the game.

Again NSU rallied, using a 9-0 run to pull within one, 44-43, and after several minutes of back-and-forth the Sharks regained the lead, 55-54.

Minutes later, Etherington drained a clutch 3-pointer to bring UIndy back on top, 59-58, and shortly after Jimmy King netted a three of his own to make it 62-60.

But the Sharks reeled off a 5-0 run, putting the Hounds against the ropes with just 30 seconds remaining. Lawton sank a pair of free throws on one possession, and drained his heroic 3-pointer on an ensuing drive to force the extra period.

The Sharks jumped all over the Hounds in OT, racing out to a 75-67 lead while keeping UIndy scoreless for nearly four full minutes.

Still, the Hounds managed to use the long ball to get within one possession after triples from Kempson and freshman Tate Hall, trailing just 80-78.

NSU's Harrison Goodrick – who led all scorers with 23 points – drained the necessary free throws on the other end, however, ending the comeback bid.

Kempson paced UIndy with 17 points and 12 rebounds, good for his second double-double of the season. Eric Davidson followed with 16 points, knocking down a season-best five 3-pointers, while adding five rebounds and three assists.

Etherington also tallied double figures with 13 points, chipping in four rebounds and a pair of assists.

All told, the Hounds finished 18 of 38 (47.4%) from 3-point range - tying the program's record set against Lewis back on Feb. 21, 2008 - and 10-31 (32.2%) from 2-point land. On the plus side, the Hounds totaled a season-high 25 assists on their 28 makes, but finished just 4 of 8 from the charity stripe, compared the NSU's 24 of 30.

UIndy enters its final non-conference game of the regular season Monday, meeting No. 14 Barry in Miami Shores at 7 p.m. ET.
