Greyhounds conclude seven-game road trip with dominant win over Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team closed out a season long road trip the same way they started it nearly one month ago – with a convincing win over a regional opponent.

The Greyhounds (6-3) held Cedarville (4-4) to a season-low 22 percent (13-for-59) shooting, a season best effort from the Greyhound defense that paved the way for a 58-39 UIndy win at Callan Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

"Defensively, we brought some great energy into the game and that helped us from the opening tip," Head coach Kristin Drabyn said. "We also rebounded well and we limited the number of shots they were able to get by not giving up offensive boards. We were also able to get out in transition off those misses and get points and if you do that you're going to win."

Sydney Brackemyre had 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting to lead the Greyhounds. UIndy also got season-highs in points from Devin Ferguson (12 pts) and Taylor Foster (9 pts), rounding out an efficient offensive attack that knocked down 45.8 percent (22-for-48) of their shot attempts.

"Devin and Taylor were both great today," Drabyn added "They have both worked extremely hard this year to get better offensively and today it paid off. If you want to win on the road, you need to get contributions from everyone and those two stepped up today."

It was all Hounds in the early going, as UIndy held Cedarville to 2-for-16 shooting in first quarter, closing out the frame with a 12-0 run to take a 17-5 lead after 10 minutes of play. The five points surrendered are the fewest allowed in a quarter since the women's game switched to the four quarter format in back in 2015.

UIndy stayed hot from the floor in the second, knocking down each of their first two field goal attempts to stretch the lead to 22-5 with 8:46 to go in the half. With the game slipping out of reach, the Yellow Jackets answered with an 8-2 run that got them within 24-13 midway through the quarter.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it was as close as they could get to the Hounds before the half as UIndy didn't surrender a field goal the remainder of the first half, taking a 31-14 lead into the break. A stingy Gryehound defense held Cedarville to just 5-for-30 shooting in the opening half.

The Greyhounds continued to cruise when the third quarter began, stretching their lead to as many as 23 at one point. Cedarville closed out the final 2:29 of the third quarter with an 8-0 run to get back within striking distance at 45-30.

But the Greyhounds responded with a good start to the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run that spanned the opening five minutes of the quarter, halting any further comeback attempt from the Yellow Jackets. UIndy's lead would climb back over 20 points before the final horn sounded.

The Greyhounds dominated the rebounding battle, grabbing a season-high 47 boards while surrendering just 30 to the Yellow Jackets. Sarah Costello led all players with nine boards with Martha Burse pulling down eight.

Cedarville's 39 points on Saturday match a season-low in points allowed by the Greyhounds. UIndy held St. Edward's to the same amount back on Nov. 25 down in Puerto Rico.

The Greyhounds will be back on their home floor for one final contest before the Christmas break, taking on IU-Kokomo on Thursday, Dec. 15. Tipoff from Nicoson Hall is set for 7:00 p.m.
