Hounds fall behind early, drop final non-conference game of the year to Northwood

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound women's basketball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, looking to get back in the win column against Northwood University.

UIndy opened with the game's first five points, but fell in a double-digit hole in the first quarter that they couldn't crawl out of on their way to a 75-67 loss.

Three Greyhounds cracked double digit points with Sydney Brackmyre's 20 points leading the way. Martha Burse and Nicole Anderson had 18 and 14 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough as UIndy dropped to 7-5 on the year.

"They were hitting shots and we had to battle back and it was a lot for us to overcome when we fell behind early," Head coach Kristin Drabyn said after the game. "Our resolve today was great and we fought until the end, but you have to be focused and smart when you work hard. You can't turn the ball over 18 times and you can't let their best player go off for 22 points. Our kids fight and I love them for it and I'm going to fight with them as we move forward from this."

After falling behind 5-0, the Timberwolves got hot from the field, knocking down 10 of their next 12 shots to open up a 26-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. Jordyn Nurenberg had 10 first quarter points and Maddy Seely knocked down connected for nine of her game-high 22 points in the opening 10 minutes to pace the visitors.

Following a brief word at the quarter break, the Hounds would dust themselves off and storm back into the game, ripping off a 14-4 run over the first 6:09 to cut the Northwood lead to one possession at 30-27. But try as they may, the Hounds couldn't pull in front of the Wolves and a halftime buzzer-beating three from Hannah Orwat made it 39-31 Northwood at the break.

Anderson opened the third quarter by scoring UIndy's first five points to trim the lead to 42-36, but an 8-0 Northwood run later in the quarter stretched the lead to double figures once again. UIndy would once again get within six points midway through the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as Northwood went 3-for-4 from the floor and 9-for-12 from the line to close out the game.

Despite the loss, the Hounds turned in one of their better shooting performances of the year, knocking down 49 percent (25-for-51) of their field goals on the night. But the Wolves were just slightly better from the field, hitting on 49.1 percent (27-for-55) of their attempts.

Northwood grabbed 32 boards while holding the Greyhounds to a season-low 23. The Wolves held a 36-28 advantage on points in the paint and recorded 15 second chance points on 10 offensive boards.

UIndy will jump back into GLVC play when the calendar flips to 2017. The first test for the Hounds in the New Year will come on Thursday, Jan. 5, when UIndy is at Missouri-St. Louis. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. eastern time.
