Rockhurst wins GLVC shootout over Greyhounds, 98-93

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It took a phenomenal offensive performance and some late-game execution, but the Rockhurst Hawks upset the visiting UIndy Greyhounds 98-93 Thursday night in the Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks (11-11, 6-8 GLVC) – who entered the game near the bottom of the conference in scoring and field goal percentage – shot over 62 percent (33-53) overall and 64 percent (9-14) from 3-point land, both easily season highs. Their 98 points were also the most scored against any other Division II team.

For their part, the Greyhounds (17-5, 11-3) finished over 51 percent (31-60) overall, but hit only five of 18 threes and fell victim to an early deficit brought on by Rockhurst's efficient shooting.

"Rockhurst just wanted it more out of the gate," Head Coach Stan Gouard told WICR afterward. The Hawks hit 11 of their first 13 shots, including their first five 3-pointers. "Think about how they started the game versus how we started. All those close games we've had recently have come from bad starts."

The host Hawks were magnificent from the field early on, racing out to a 13-point lead at 27-14 by the under-12 media break.

Shortly after the timeout, the Greyhounds began chipping away at the Hawks' sizeable lead. UIndy outscored RU 29-18 the rest of the half, doing enough on both ends of the court to pull within 45-43 heading into intermission.

UIndy found most of its first-half success at the charity stripe, sinking 13 of 16 attempts in the opening period. Senior Jordan Loyd, who led all players with 14 points at the break, scored 11 of the Hounds' final 13 to end the frame.

Despite cooling off after their hot start, the Hawks still shot 68 percent (17-25) while racking up 13 assists in the first half.

It didn't take long for UIndy to level the contest out of the break, as junior Ernest Maize scored on the second half's opening possession to make it 45 apiece. Minutes later a Maize steal led to a layup from senior Joe Retic, officially giving the Hounds their first lead of the game, 49-47.

But a late 12-3 Rockhurst run created the slightest separation on the scoreboard, making it 73-65 with under eight minutes remaining, and the Hawks made enough timely plays down the stretch to maintain the lead.

On several occasions UIndy was within one possession, one of which came after Loyd converted a traditional 3-point play near the 4:00 mark, making it 82-79. The Hawks answered, however, and quickly pushed the lead back up to eight at 89-81.

Over the course of the last two minutes Rockhurst hit just 9 of 14 foul shots, but it was enough to hold off the Hounds until the final buzzer.

"We didn't have anything down the stretch," Gouard noted. "It boils down to rebounding and being the tougher team."

Rockhurst finished with 34 rebounds to UIndy's 23.

Loyd scored a game-high 28 points, hitting 9 of 16 shots while adding three rebounds and a steal.

Senior Tyler Rambo tied a career-best with 17 points on an efficient 7-for-9 effort, chipping in four boards, three assists and a steal.

Fellow senior Lucas Barker also finished with 17, hitting 8 of 11 freebies while dishing a game-high seven assists.

Maize and freshman Jimmy King also finished in double figures for the Hounds, scoring 10 apiece.

Rockhurst had six finish in double digits, led by Dominique Washington's 20 on 8-for-12 shooting.

"We fell short, but we'll bounce back," Gouard said. "We'll go back to the drawing board, get after it in practice tomorrow and get ready for William Jewell."

The Greyhounds travel to face the William Jewell Cardinals Saturday in Liberty, Mo. Tip from The Mabee Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
