Men's lacrosse wins inaugural game 12-9 at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. – UIndy history was made Saturday afternoon over 450 miles away from Indianapolis, in a small town near the western edge of North Carolina. For the first time in program history, the Greyhound men's lacrosse team took the field for their season opener, signaling the beginning of a new era.

The new Hounds wasted little time getting their feet wet, defeating Mars Hill 12-9 in a non-conference affair to kick off the season.

Sporting a youthful team of mostly freshmen, UIndy (1-0) got three-goal performances from Luke Allen and Parker Kump. Eric Lounds and Matthew Johnson netted a pair of goals each.

"The guys played extremely well in their first collegiate game," Head Coach Greg Stocks said after the win. "The offense moved the ball quickly and the defense won their match-ups all over the field."

The Lions (0-2) – the defending South Atlantic Conference champions – jumped out to an early 1-0 lead less than 60 seconds into the game, but Lounds' first goal near the 10-minute mark evened the score.

Lounds, a native of Haslett, Mich., also cemented his place in program history by scoring the first Greyhound goal.
After Lounds landed another goal, Allen scored two more to help UIndy hold a 4-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Hounds created some separation in the second, outscoring the Lions 3-1 on goals from Kump, Allen and Tyler Johnston to carry a 7-4 advantage into the half.

Johnson and Kump contributed a pair of goals in the third period, and the Hounds added three in the fourth to secure the win.

Shawn Kimble and Johnston each finished with a goal and two assists, and Adam Dobis led the team with five ground balls.

As a team, UIndy outshot Mars Hill 42 to 28, placing nine more shots on target, as well.

Getting the start in the cage, Jarod Kimble made five saves against 14 shots.

The Greyhounds are back in action next Saturday, traveling to face Emmanuel in Franklin Springs, Ga., at 2 p.m. UIndy's home opener is the following week, Mar. 5 against Shorter.
