Greyhounds move one step closer to conference tournament with comeback win over Rangers

KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team took one step closer to punching their ticket to the 2016 GLVC Tournament with a 69-59 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon inside Desimone Gymnasium.

Senior Princess German had a monster day for the Greyhounds pouring in a game-high 31 points, the third time this year the Gary, Ind.-native hit the 30-point mark. Sarah Costello recorded her second career double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Nicole Anderson chipped in with 15 points for UIndy, who avenged an early season home loss to the Rangers to improve to 8-19 on the year and 6-11 in the GLVC.

Brittney Fair had 13 points and Tara Knapstein added 11 for the Rangers, who couldn't hold on to a double digit lead and fell to 13-12 on the year, 7-10 in the conference.

The Greyhounds snatched the early lead with buckets on their first two possessions, but struggled to find the bucket the rest of the opening quarter. Parkside closed out the final 5:06 of the opening quarter with an 11-3 run to take a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.

Parkside extended their lead out to double figures for the first time with a pair of free throws from Knapstein with 5:51 to play in the half. UIndy would get the deficit back to single digits before the horn, eventually trailing 35-28 at the break.

Just as they had done two nights earlier against Lewis, the Greyhounds' defense stepped up in a big way to open the second half. UIndy held the Rangers without a point for more than five minutes to open the second half, eventually taking a 36-35 lead with 5:32 left in the third following a layup from German.

The Rangers would re-take the lead shortly after, but UIndy had the last laugh in the third quarter when Anderson converted on a three-point play at the buzzer to give the Greyhounds a 47-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After the teams traded buckets to open the fourth, the Greyhounds put the game out of reach with a 14-0 run that was capped by a fast break layup from German with 4:26 to play. The Rangers were able to get the lead back to single digits with less than two minutes to go, but the Greyhounds closed out the game at the line to seal a critical win.

UIndy connected on 43.4 percent (23-for-53) of their field goals on the day, going 8-for-20 from long range and 15-for-19 at the line. German picked up 10 of her 31 points at the charity stripe on 13 attempts.

Rebounds were 39-31 in favor of the Rangers with German setting a new career high by pulling down eight boards for UIndy. Turnovers were 13-10 in favor of the Greyhounds with both teams getting 14 points off mistakes.

Next up for the Hounds is their final regular season game of the year against St. Joseph's on Wednesday, Feb. 24 on Pack the House Night and Senior Night inside Nicoson Hall. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
