Hounds open first road trip of the year with a pair of wins on Saturday

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team hit the road for the first time in their young season, taking on the Oaks of Oakland City University in a double header on Saturday at Pinnick Field.

The Greyhounds exploded for six runs in the fourth in game one and never looked back on their way to a 13-1 victory in the opener. In game two, the Hounds got another stellar effort from junior Jake Shaw, who tossed a complete game gem in a 3-0 win.

Freshman Devon Hensley belted his first two career home runs and drove in seven runs in the opener for UIndy. Brady Thomas and Joe Trennepohl added their first round trippers of the year and Anthony Asalon recorded five hits on the day for the Greyhounds.

UIndy (3-2) pitchers Matthew Kaplanis, Shaw and Michael Schalasky combined to allow just eight hits on the day while fanning 19 hitters. With the losses, Oakland City dropped to 2-4 on the year.

GAME ONE: UIndy 13 – Oakland City 1

Each of the first seven Greyhound batters reached base to open the top half of the fourth inning as the Greyhounds broke a scoreless tie when Storm Joop singled home Colin Hawk. Kyle Orloff and Carter Pranger followed with RBIs of their own before Hensley belted a three-run shot down the left field line to make it 6-0.

Thomas led off the next inning with a home run and later in the inning, Hensley ripped another three-run shot over the left field wall that made it a 10-0 game.

Hensley brought another runner home with an RBI ground out in the seventh. Asalon followed with an RBI single and come in to score one batter later on Alex Ritchie's run scoring double to cap the scoring.

The 13 runs was more than enough run support for UIndy starter Kaplanis, who tossed six-plus innings of five-hit ball, walking one and striking out five to move to 2-0 on the year.

The Greyhounds tagged Oaks starter Craig Peters for six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. UIndy pounded out 16 hits off Oakland City pitching in the opener.

GAME TWO: UIndy 3 – Oakland City 0

The second game belonged to Shaw, as the transfer from Fredericton, Ontario scattered three hits and walked two while punching out 13 batters to earn his first win in a Greyhound uniform. Shaw became the first Greyhound pitcher to record double digit strikeouts in a game since Jordan Tackett recorded 11 K's against Illinois Springfield back on Mar. 29, 2015.

The Greyhounds threatened in each of the first two innings, but left two runners on base in each of their first two trips to the dish. After Shaw stranded two runners in the bottom of the third, Trennepohl picked his starter up in the top of the fourth, belting a one-out, two-run home run over the left field wall to open the scoring.

Oakland City threatened again in the fourth with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt that put both runners in scoring position, Shaw dug in and came up with two huge strikeouts to keep the Oaks scoreless.

The Hounds added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Asalon doubled to deep center, brining Hensley home from second base. Shaw punctuated the win by recording five of the final six outs of the game via the strikeout, giving him 20 for the year and lowering his ERA to 1.29.

UIndy will look for the series sweep in the weekend finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Pinnick Field is set for 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
