UIndy parts ways with women's basketball head coach Constantin Popa

INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Sue Willey announced that the university would not be renewing the contract of women's basketball head coach Constanin Popa. The news came after the Greyhounds finished with a 10-20 (.333) record in 2015-16 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

"I want to thank Constanin and his staff for their years of hard work and commitment towards UIndy and the women's basketball program," said Willey. "However as a department, we felt it was the right time to take the program in a different direction. We wish them the best of luck going forward."

Popa took over as the UIndy women's basketball head coach Mar. 30, 2011 after spending four years as the team's top assistant. The Greyhounds compiled an 83-66 (.557) record in his five seasons at the helm. The Hounds reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of his first three years, but failed to earn a postseason bid the previous two.

Having compiled a 22-36 (.379) mark since the start of the 2014-15 season, UIndy is coming off back-to-back losing campaigns for the first time since 1999. This year, the Greyhounds finished with just 10 wins, ending its season with an overtime loss in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals.

A nationwide search for the vacant position will begin immediately. Assisant coach Jen Conely will shepard the program until the new head coach is found.
