Indianapolis – Sophomore
Blake Richardson drove in three runs in his first start of the season, and Matt Kaplanis (4-0) tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead the Hounds to a 6-1 win Friday afternoon over No. 9 Quincy (8-2).
UIndy's senior ace had his best outing of the season, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine. Kaplanis picked apart the Quincy lineup in just 90 pitches, throwing nearly 75 percent of his pitches for strikes.
Indianapolis (9-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice off of Hawk starter Jake Peterson in the first. Senior
Anthony Asalon opened with a single to right before back-to-back bunt singles from seniors
Alex Ritchie and
Colin Hawk loaded the bases for
Brady Thomas.
Asalon would score after Peterson got Thomas to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, but an RBI single from sophomore
Storm Joop scored Ritchie proving to be all the run support Kaplanis would need.
The Hawks managed to get just two runners past second base on the afternoon and at one point, Kaplanis had retired a string of 11 straight Quincy hitters.
Hawk's double to lead off the bottom of the third coupled with a pair of Quincy errors from third basemen TJ Tamaccio led to two more runs for the hosts. Freshman
Kyle Orloff picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Hawk, and Richardson followed with an RBI single scoring Joop.
Joop finished the day 2-for-4, while scoring a pair of runs and adding an RBI. Hawk tallied a trio of hits in five at-bats with a run scored.
The Hounds return to the diamond tomorrow for a meeting with Saginaw Valley State University. Tentative first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Greyhound, but be sure to check UIndyAthletics.com and Greyhound Athletics on Twitter @UIndyAthletics for possible schedule changes.
