INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhounds picked up their ninth consecutive win Saturday in walk-off fashion. Senior
Alex Ritchie scored the winning run on a Saginaw Valley (5-8) throwing error to lift UIndy (10-2) to a 4-3 victory at Greyhound Park.
Tied at three heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Hounds managed to load the bases without a hit. Ritchie led off with a walk before moving to second on a
Colin Hawk sacrifice.
Brady Thomas and
Storm Joop then followed with walks to set the stage for freshman
Kyle Orloff.
Down 0-2 in the count, Orloff bounced a high chopper to short, leading to a play at the plate. Jordan Swiss' throw to home skipped by catcher Luke Valutis, and Ritchie slid in safely for the walk-off win.
Junior
Connor Mailloux got the start on the mount for Indianapolis, allowing one unearned run in 4.2 innings. The bullpen did the rest of the work, with sophomore closer
Dylan Stutsman (1-0) earning the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Indianapolis jumped on top 1-0 in the second with a RBI single to right from
Joe Trennepohl to score Joop. The Cardinals would add a run of their own in the fifth after Garrett Soule walked with the bases loaded, scoring Nate Blackwell.
UIndy answered in the bottom half of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles from senior
Anthony Asalon and Hawk, but the Saginaw would knot the score at 3-3 in the seventh with a pair of runs.
Asalone, Hawk, Joop and Orloff each tallied two hits on the day, and the Hounds recorded 11 hits as a team.
Sunday's weekend finale will feature a pair of games for the Greyhounds against their opponents from the past two days. With rain expected in the Indy area Saturday night, Sunday's games have been moved to Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. Indianapolis will take on Quincy at noon before meeting the Cardinals again at 3 p.m.
