WHEELING, W.Va. – The UIndy men's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the inaugural season Saturday, 11-7, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference opener at Wheeling Jesuit.
Tied 7-7 entering the fourth quarter, the host Cardinals (2-3, 1-0 ECAC) netted four goals in a row to pull away and seal their second win in a row.
The Greyhounds (3-1, 0-1) – who began their inaugural season with three consecutive wins – were held to a season-low in goals, and for the first time surrendered double-figure goals to their opponent.
Neither side led by more than one goal until the Cardinals' late stretch, as the game featured seven ties and multiple lead changes.
The first Greyhound lead came midway through the second quarter, when
Tyler Johnston found the back of the net to make it 5-4.
Wheeling scored two unanswered, however, and carried a 5-4 lead into the half.
Matthew Johnson's second goal of the day early in the third quarter tied the game at 5-5, and later in the period
Luke Allen tallied two goals within three minutes to give the Hounds a 7-6 lead.
The Cardinals would then finish with five consecutive goals, including a 4-0 edge in the fourth quarter to pick up the conference win.
Allen and Johnson each finished with two goals for the Hounds, and
Parker Kump led the team with two ground balls.
UIndy finished with just 10 ground balls to Wheeling's 19, and also had three more turnovers.
The Hounds look to get back on track next week when they travel to Winter Park, Fla., to take on Rollins Mar. 16 at 7 p.m.
