WINTER PARK, Fla. – The UIndy men's lacrosse team came up just short at Rollins College Wednesday night, falling 9-7 at Barker Family Stadium in a game that featured multiple ties and solid defensive effort on both sides.
The Greyhounds (3-2) and Tars (5-3) each received votes in the latest Nike/USILA Men's Division 2 Rankings, and the contest that took place between the lines reflected that level of competition.
The host Tars – competing in their eighth season – got off to an early lead over the visiting Hounds, scoring three unanswered goals in the first nine minutes of the game.
As the first quarter clock dwindled down,
Parker Kump finally got UIndy on the board with just 10 seconds remaining, making it 3-1 after one period.
Greyhound junior
James Smith came up big in the second, scoring a pair of goals to tie the game at 3-3 with just over six minutes left until halftime.
Rollins' Andrew Matthews netted his second goal at the 4:50 mark, however, handing the Tars a 4-3 lead at the break.
Less than one minute into the third quarter, Smith tallied his hat-trick with a third goal, knotting the game at 4-4.
Rollins again jumped ahead, using two goals within three minutes to take a 6-4 edge. UIndy's
Luke Allen pulled the Hounds closer with a man-up goal off a smooth assist from
Matthew Johnson.
For the third time in the match the Hounds tied the game when Kump put away his second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter, bringing the contest even at 6-6.
Just 60 seconds later, Kump's slick offensive effort led to his third goal of the night, giving the Hounds their first lead, 7-6.
Rollins continued the game's theme with a game-tying goal on a broken play near the 8-minute mark, as Greg Taicher scooped up the ball and worked his way to his first career goal for the Tars.
The Tars retook the lead later in the fourth with Carson Buell's second goal, and a couple minutes later got another goal on a loose-ball scrum right in front of the cage.
Their 9-7 advantage would hold, marking the eighth-year program's fifth win of the season and UIndy's second loss.
Jarod Kimble was stellar in the cage for the Hounds, totaling a career-high 16 saves against 25 shots on goal.
Kump and Smith each finished with three goals, and Johnson contributed two assists. Kump added to his team high, moving to 14 goals this season.
Robert Berardi won 14 of 20 face-offs, and also paced the Greyhounds with five groundballs.
UIndy looks to bounce back with another tough game against Florida Southern. The Greyhounds and Moccasins face-off Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla
