Florida Southern's late run dooms Greyhounds in 17-12 loss

LAKELAND, Fla. – The UIndy men's lacrosse team closed their spring break trip down south with a 17-12 defeat at Florida Southern Saturday afternoon.

In a game that was delayed nearly one hour due to inclement weather, the first-year Greyhounds (3-3) led early in the first quarter, but the Moccasins (6-5) eventually found their offensive rhythm and outscored their guests 16 to 9 over the final 45 minutes.

UIndy got off to a strong start in the opening quarter, taking a 3-1 lead on a pair of goals from Parker Kump and another from Shawn Kimble.

Despite being held to only one goal in the first 15 minutes, the Mocs rallied in the second quarter with four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the game. Heading into the half, FSC led 6-5 after nearly doubling the Hounds in shot attempts in the second period.

The Mocs scored less than 10 seconds into the third quarter to bump their lead to 7-5, and finished the quarter with four more goals to see their lead swell to 11-8.

UIndy had one more push early in the fourth quarter. Shawn Kimble, Kevin Spurlock and Luke Allen each found the back of the net all in a two-minute stretch, pulling the Hounds back within one, 12-11.

But the Mocs proved too much in the end, eventually putting the game far out of reach with five consecutive goals.

FSC finished with 30 shots on frame compared to UIndy's 21, and also won the faceoff battle 21 to 12. The Greyhounds also spent twice as much time as the Mocs in the penalty box.

UIndy keeper Jarod Kimble finished with 13 saves in his sixth collegiate start. Shawn Kimble and Kump each recorded a trio of goals, and Tyler Johnston and Allen both had three assists.

The Hounds return to conference action with a home game against Lindenwood Mar. 29. The first faceoff from Key Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
