Men's lacrosse stifles 17th-ranked Lindenwood, 8-3

INDIANAPOLIS – Behind a sterling performance in goal from freshman Jarod Kimble, the UIndy men's lacrosse team defeated the 17th-ranked Lindenwood Lions 8-3 Tuesday afternoon at Key Stadium.

The win moved the Greyhounds to 4-3 overall this season, and marks the program's first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference victory. It is also the program's first win against a nationally-ranked opponent, and snaps a recent three-game skid.

Lindenwood (5-3, 3-2 ECAC) entered Tuesday averaging more than 14 goals per contest, good for eighth-best in the nation and tops in-conference. But Kimble racked up 14 saves and the rest of the defense did its part in holding the Lions to their lowest goal total since Feb. 22, 2014 (at Saint Leo).

The low-scoring affair seemed inevitable right out of the gate, as Tyler Johnston's goal at the 13:14 mark in the first quarter marked the only goal during the first 13-plus minutes. UIndy would net two more goals in the final 45 seconds of the period – one of which was an own goal committed by the Lions – and carried a 3-0 lead into the second.

UIndy and Lindenwood each scored twice in the second quarter, giving the Greyhounds a 5-2 halftime lead. Parker Kump tallied his third goal a little more than one minute into the period, and Matthew Johnson added another near the 4-minute mark.

The Greyhounds increased their lead with two more tallies in the third quarter, getting a stroke of fortune on an early Shawn Kimble score before Kump put away his fourth goal in a man-up situation late in the period.

Down 7-2 heading into the final 15 minutes, the Lions began stepping up their pressure on the attack. Lindenwood let loose 14 shots in the fourth quarter, five of which were denied by Jarod Kimble. Only one found its mark, but was essentially negated by Tyler Johnston's second goal of the game later in the period.

Kimble finished with a gaudy .824 save percentage, picking up his fourth win of the season in the cage.

Kump's four goals increased his team-leading season total to 21, and with two Tuesday Johnston reached the double-digit mark with 11.

Johnson, Johnston, Jimmy Smith, Max Gerhardt and Luke Allen also finished with one assist each in the win.

The Greyhounds look to build on Tuesday's effort later this week with an ECAC contest at Walsh. Face-off from North Canton, Ohio, is scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday, April 2.
