Allen's overtime goal gives men's lacrosse 5-4 win at Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – UIndy men's lacrosse defeated Walsh 5-4 Saturday afternoon in overtime, getting the game-winning goal from Luke Allen in the extra session at Vasco Field.

Allen's golden goal came from an assist by fellow freshman Tyler Johnston with 2:10 left in OT, signaling the end of a defensive struggle that featured four ties and as many lead changes.

Despite a sub-.500 record entering Saturday's game, the Cavaliers (4-7, 1-4 ECAC) were a battle-tested bunch that had won multiple overtime games and had shared the field with some of the nation's best teams.

For the Greyhounds (5-3, 2-1), it marked the first overtime game in the first-year program's history.

The Cavs took the first lead of the day on a man-up goal midway through the first period, but shortly after UIndy's James Smith netted an unassisted goal to even the score.

The Hounds captured their first lead in the second quarter, getting a pair of goals from Parker Kump and Kevin Spurlock to take a 3-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Walsh scored twice within a 20 second span in the third quarter, regaining a 4-3 lead, but Smith put away his second goal near the 3:30 mark off a feed from Shawn Kimble, making it 4-4.

Both sides were blanked in the final period, as UIndy goalkeeper Jarod Kimble totaled four of his eight saves to help force the overtime period.

After Walsh's Ryan Rafac won the face-off to start overtime, the Hounds' Adam Dobis caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball to give UIndy possession.

Following a timeout and two errant shots, Allen ended the game with his goal from Johnston's assist.

UIndy finished with 22 ground balls to Walsh's 28, but had two fewer turnovers (17 to 15) than its hosts. Walsh won eight of the 11 face-offs.

Riding their two-game win streak, the Greyhounds return to Key Stadium to host Lake Erie Thursday, April 7, at 4 p.m.
