Men's lacrosse stuns sixth-ranked Storm behind strong second half

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's lacrosse team continues to shatter expectations in its inaugural season, as they earned yet another momentous victory Thursday at Key Stadium in a 9-7 decision over No. 6 Lake Erie.

The win was especially significant for Greyhound Head Coach Greg Stocks, who was facing a program he helped build from the ground up once Lake Erie added men's lacrosse in 2007. Stocks went 39-34 in five seasons on the Storm sideline, winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship in 2014.

UIndy (6-3, 3-1 ECAC) improved to a perfect 3-0 at Key Stadium, including two wins against nationally ranked opponents.

Visiting Lake Erie (7-3, 4-1) and the Greyhounds faced off in atypically chilly conditions Thursday, as the temperature sat in the low-40's and a wintry mix fell steadily on Kiesel Field.

The first half played out like much of the Hounds' recent games: a defensive struggle between two first-rate defenses.

Despite an early goal from Matthew Johnson – and several other near-misses – UIndy fell behind after one quarter of play, 2-1, after the Storm netted a pair of goals in response.

Reigning ECAC Rookie of the Week, Parker Kump, tied the game in the second quarter when he scooped up a rebound and put away his 23rd goal of the season.

But Lake Erie rattled off three unanswered afterward; two coming before the break and another near the start of the third quarter.

Trailing 5-2, the Hounds flipped the script with three quick goals near the midway point of the third quarter. Scott LaPoe began the rally with his fifth goal of the season, and less than one minute later Luke Allen scored from the left side of the cage to make it 5-4.

UIndy scored again within 60 seconds when Kump converted a man-up goal on an assist from fellow attackman Tyler Johnston, making it 5-5.

Perhaps the most thrilling goal came in the final minute of the quarter, as Johnston himself scored with just seconds remaining on the shotclock, giving UIndy its second lead of the game.

The Hounds would not relinquish that advantage in the final period. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless action, Kevin Spurlock scored his third goal of 2016 after Lake Erie turned the ball over near its own goal.

The Storm pulled within one goal twice down the stretch, but each time the Hounds had an answer.

Johnson scored his second goal near the 4:24 mark, making it 8-6, and after a Lake Erie goal Kump sealed the victory with his third and final tally. With about 45 seconds on the game clock, Allen found Kump near the goal with only the keeper to beat, and the UIndy freshman found the back of the net.

The Greyhounds took 16 first-half shots, which resulted in only two goals, but found their mark with seven second-half goals on 12 shots.

Lake Erie won 11 of 20 faceoffs, but also finished with two more turnovers and an empty possession during its lone man-up opportunity.

UIndy's Jarod Kimble put on another solid performance in-goal, totaling nine saves. Kimble and the rest of the Greyhound defense has held each of their last three opponents below seven goals.

The Greyhounds next hit the road to face conference opponent Ohio Valley this Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Vienna, W.Va.
