MARIETTA, Ohio – The UIndy men's lacrosse squad won their fourth game in a row Sunday, defeating Ohio Valley 15-9 at Don Drumm Stadium on the campus of Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, just minutes from Ohio Valley University.
Coming off a thrilling
9-7 win at home against sixth-ranked Lake Erie last Thursday, the Greyhounds (7-3, 4-1 ECAC) kept the ball rolling by dominating OVU in many aspects of the game, most notably in possession. UIndy finished with three times more shots, doubled the home team in total ground balls (37 to 16), and won 19 of the game's 26 face-offs.
The Fighting Scots (2-6, 0-4) looked poised to snap the Hounds' streak and pick up their first conference win of 2016, netting three consecutive goals during the first five minutes. OVU first got on the board just 22 seconds into the game on a goal from Steve Zolezzi.
But UIndy settled in, and its defense – which has now held four straight teams under 10 goals – kept the Fighting Scots from scoring the rest of the opening quarter.
Greyhound midfielder
Kevin Spurlock opened the scoring for UIndy, netting an unassisted goal near the five minute mark to make it 3-1. He followed a few minutes later with a man-up goal off a feed from
Matthew Johnson. Johnson contributed another helper during the final 90 seconds of the quarter assisting
Shawn Kimble's game-tying goal.
Qusarn Caldwell scored twice for OVU in the early stages of the second quarter, helping his team grab a 5-4 advantage, but shortly after UIndy took over the game.
Helped by costly Fighting Scot penalties, the Greyhounds rattled off eight straight goals from the 7:32 mark in the second quarter to 9:05 in the third – three of which came on man-up opportunities.
UIndy's leading scorer,
Parker Kump, tallied three goals in a matter of minutes, and defenseman
Max Gerhardt got in the scoring column with his first career goal to make it 8-5 at the half.
The Hounds opened the second half with four consecutive goals, two from
Jimmy Smith, one from Johnson and another from Kimble.
OVU finally scored again at 7:11 in the third, but by then UIndy's one-goal deficit had turned into a seven-goal lead.
Although the Fighting Scots made a bit of a comeback, the Hounds got two late marks from Spurlock and Johnson to help seal the victory.
Kump's four-goal effort Sunday increases his team lead to 29 this season. Spurlock and Smith each finished with three goals, while Smith and Johnson added two apiece.
Luke Allen led the Hounds with three assists in the win, and Johnson finished with two. Kimble,
Eric Lounds and
Conor Acus each delivered one assist.
Gerhardt totaled a game-high 10 ground balls and Lounds followed with seven to help the Greyhounds finish with a sizeable plus-21 advantage in ground balls.
UIndy goalie
Jarod Kimble earned the win in the cage after playing more than 46 minutes, and fellow keeper
Tanner Gurin had three saves in 13 minutes in relief.
The Greyhounds will play two of their final three regular season games at Key Stadium, starting with a 1 p.m. meeting against Seton Hill next Saturday, April 16.
