INDIANAPOLIS - Six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter from 10th-ranked Seton Hill was too much for the 18th-ranked Greyhounds to overcome in Saturday's ECAC showdown, as the Griffins escaped Key Stadium with a 9-7 win.
Â
UIndy (7-4, 4-2 ECAC) led 7-3 entering the final period, but the Griffins (9-3, 4-2) dominated possession over the final 15 minutes, and found the back of the net on six of their 14 shots. Seton Hill won 15 of the game's 19 face-offs, including five of seven in the fourth quarter.
Â
For the first three quarters of the game it appeared the Hounds were going to upset yet another ranked opponent and remain in pace atop the conference standings.
Â
UIndy relied heavily on its defense to start the game, as goalie
Jarod Kimble put on a stellar eight-save performance in the first quarter.
Parker Kump would finally break the scoreless tie with a goal at the 3:29 mark, giving the Hounds a 1-0 edge.
Â
A late Seton Hill penalty in the first quarter set the Hounds up with a man-up opportunity and possession to start the second, and
Matthew Johnson immediately took advantage with a goal just six seconds into the quarter from a pass by
Shawn Kimble. Johnson returned the favor minutes later, assisting a Kimble goal to make it 3-0.
Â
After being held off the board for over 22 minutes of game time, the visiting Griffins finally scored to pull within 3-1.
Â
Before the half was over,
Tyler Johnston put away a perfect pass from
Jimmy Smith right in front of the goal to make it 4-1 at the break.
Â
Smith himself scored a pair of impressive goals in the third quarter, each coming from runs started behind the cage. Between his two scores, the Griffins added to their total with two more from Zach Hartmann.
Â
Up 6-3, Johnson added his second tally with less than 30 seconds left in the quarter to give the Hounds their biggest lead of the day.
Â
Seton Hill took over early in the fourth, controlling possession and capitalizing on almost every shot. The Griffins scored four within a four minute stretch, tying the game at 7-7, and took their first lead on a goal near the 2-minute mark.
Â
On UIndy's final possession, Seton Hill's Nick Neferis forced a turnover, and on the other end Sean Stanners scored an insurance goal to all but end the game.
Â
UIndy was out-shot 43 to 30 for the game and 14 to 6 in the last quarter, and finished with a 27-to-16 disadvantage in ground balls.
Â
The Greyhounds look to bounce back next Saturday on the road when they take on Alderson Broaddus in Philippi, W.Va. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET.
