PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Freshman
Tyler Johnston netted a season-high five goals and assisted on another Saturday afternoon, helping the No. 18 Greyhounds get back to their winning ways in a 14-10 decision at Alderson Broaddus.
After losing a heartbreaking match against No. 10 Seton Hill a week ago, the Hounds (8-4, 5-2 ECAC) bounced back to earn their fifth Eastern College Athletic Conference win of the season and take another step toward securing a conference tournament bid.
Johnston entered the day third in the team in scoring, but was the primary force behind the Greyhound attack, putting away five of UIndy's first eight goals.
The host Battlers (5-9, 1-6) got on the board first, scoring just under two minutes into the contest, but a pair of goals from Johnston and another by
Jimmy Smith gave the Hounds a 3-2 edge after one quarter.
UIndy added two more in the second, as
Kevin Spurlock and Johnston again found the mark, making it 5-2 at the halftime break.
In the third period, the Greyhounds truly created separation by tallying five goals to the Battlers' one. Along with two from Johnston, UIndy got goals from
Shawn Kimble,
Matthew Johnson and
Nathaniel Hauck in the frame. Hauck's score was his first collegiate goal.
Although the Hounds led 10-3 heading to the fourth, Alderson Broaddus nearly made a game of it by scoring seven across the final 15 minutes. Greyhound goals from
Luke Allen,
Parker Kump and Kimble helped negate the comeback attempt, as UIndy wound up with a 14-10 victory.
Prior to Saturday, Johnston's season high was four goals, which he accomplished back on Feb. 27 at Emmanuel. His six total points also marked a season and career best.
Shawn Kimble led the Hounds with a pair of assists, totaling four points, and his brother
Jarod Kimble finished with six saves in the cage.
UIndy wraps up the regular season with yet another ranked opponent next Saturday, April 30, welcoming No. 5 Mercyhurst to Key Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.
