Bats sputter as Gryehounds drop two games at Midwest Crossover

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Greyhound baseball team resumed play at the inaugural Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase on Saturday afternoon, taking on Alderson Broaddus and Grand Valley State at Grand Park.

A day after the Greyhounds recorded 16 hits in a win, the Hounds struggled to get the bats going on Saturday. UIndy recorded just 14 hits and stranded 16 runners in a pair of losses, falling 7-4 to Alderson Broaddus in the morning and 3-1 to Grand Valley in the afternoon.

Junior Carter Pranger had three hits and scored three times, leading the Greyhounds in both categories. The losses drop UIndy to 12-5 on the year and 1-2 at the crossover.

GAME ONE: UIndy 4 – Alderson Broaddus 7

After three scoreless innings that saw both teams strand runners early on, the Battlers took advantage of a UIndy error early in the inning to plate an unearned run with two outs and take a 1-0 lead on the Hounds and starter Jake Shaw.

The Battlers added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before UIndy cut into the lead in the seventh. Following back-to-back singles to open the inning, the Hounds got on the board when Trevor Forde brought a run home with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Bryce Aldridge cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI groundout that brought Pranger home.

Alderson Broaddus put a dent in the Greyhounds' comeback bid in their next two trips to the plate, scoring once in the seventh and two more times in the eighth to stretch their lead five. Down to their final three outs, the Hounds chipped away at the lead courtesy of a pinch hit RBI double from Joe Trennepohl and a run scoring groundout from Anthony Asalon. It was as close as the Hounds would come before the final out was recorded.

Shaw (2-2) gave up four earned runs on 12 hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work. Chris Boatto (3-1) picked up the win for the Battlers, scattering seven hits with four walks and three punch outs in eight innings.

GAME TWO: Grand Valley State 3 – UIndy 1

The Lakers got all the offense they needed in their first trip to the plate. After a leadoff single followed by a UIndy error, Jason Ribecky plated both runners with a triple into the right center field gap. One batter later, he would score on an RBI single that put the Lakers up 3-0.

Macy Holdsworth cut the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second, his third run-scoring two bagger of the weekend.

Following three scoreless trips to the plate, the Hounds one last golden opportunity to cut into the lead loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. But the Greyhounds failed to plate a run following a strikeout and a groundout that ended the inning. UIndy would manage just two base runner over the final three innings.

Despite making his deepest outing of the year, Connor Mailloux (1-2) was saddled with the loss. The junior hurler gave up a pair of earned runs and scattered seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three.

The Greyhounds will look to close out the crossover with a win on Sunday when they take on the Dragons of Tiffin University. First pitch from diamond one is set for approximately 1:30 p.m.
