Greyhounds' season comes to an end in overtime loss to Lewis

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – In the final GLVC Tournament quarterfinal game of the night, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team tangled in an instant classic with the tournament's top seed and fourth ranked team in the nation, the Lewis Flyers.

After a combined nine ties and 17 lead changes, the Flyers ended the Greyhounds' season, escaping with a 69-63 overtime win.

In her final career game, Princess German turned in another stellar performance with 29 points to lead all players. The GLVC's leading scorer connected on nine of 14 field goal attempts, going 3-for-6 from long range and 8-for-12 from the free throw line. UIndy's season comes to an end with a 10-20 record.

GLVC Player of the Year Mariyah Brawner-Henley had 25 of her 27 points in the second half to lead the Flyers. Jessica Kelliher added 18 and Tiana Karapolous chipped in with 11 points and 10 boards for Lewis, who held on to improve to 28-1 on the year and run their winning streak to 23 games.

"It's tough to see your season end in a game that goes to overtime," "We had some opportunities to get a basket a couple times that would have put us in a better chance to win. In the first half, neither team could do much on the offensive end but things opened up in the second half. I felt we played well but we couldn't grab a few rebounds at critical times that let Lewis hang around. But I can't say enough about the fight that this team has had all year and that was on display again tonight. Those that are coming back have to remember how this felt so we're not in the same situation next year."

The Hounds jumped out in front on their first possession of the game when German buried a triple just 18 seconds into the game, but buckets would be tough to come by for UIndy the rest of the first quarter. Lewis held the Greyhounds without a field goal for more than seven minutes, but the Greyhound defense would keep the game close as UIndy trailed 12-6 after 10 minutes.

Both teams continued to struggle from the floor in the second quarter, going six and a half minutes into the period before Princess German connected on a layup to cut the Lewis lead to 15-12 at the 3:30 mark. Both teams began to knock down shots before the end of the half, but a late bucket from Alex Poole put the Flyers on top 21-19 at the half.

Through 20 minutes, the Hounds shot just 5-for-24 from the floor while Lewis went 8-for-26 in the opening half. UIndy forced 10 Lewis mistakes in the first half while turning the ball over just six times.

The Greyhounds carried their late first half shooting success over to the start of the second half, opening the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 27-21 lead just 93 seconds into the period. Lewis answered with thanks to a big third quarter from Brawner-Henley, who poured in 10 third quarter points to bring the Flyers back and give Lewis a 42-40 lead after 30 minutes.

Three free throws from Sarah Costello and a three from Nicole Anderson kicked off a wild fourth quarter and put the Greyhounds back in front, 46-45. German followed things up on the next UIndy possession with a three of her own to put the Greyhounds in front by four with 6:37 to play. Another triple from German with 4:16 to play made it 54-50 Greyhounds, her third and final of the game.

But the Flyers clawed back thanks to their post duo of Brawner-Henley and Kelliher, getting buckets from each down the stretch and eventually tying the game with 20 second to go on a jumper from Brawner-Henley. UIndy held for the last shot, but Anderson couldn't knock down a buzzer- beating jumper that would have given UIndy the upset.

The final five minutes produced a pair of ties and four lead changes with UIndy taking the last lead of the game on a Tina Negoescu three pointer that made it 63-62 with 2:13 to play. But the Flyers took the lead on their next possession and held the Hounds without a point the rest of the way, ending UIndy's upset bid and season and punching their ticket to the semifinals on Saturday.

Following their slow start, the Greyhounds rebounded to shoot 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the floor, connecting on eight of 25 three pointers and 15 of 19 free throws. Lewis knocked down 39.7 percent (23-for-58) of their attempts on the night, going 2-for-13 from three and 21-for-29 at the line.

Anderson led all players with 11 boards but Lewis controlled the game on the glass, out-rebounding UIndy 44-32 and grabbing 17 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second chance points. Lewis also controlled the battle down low, outscoring the Hounds 32-18 in the paint.

It was the final game in the careers of UIndy's four seniors; German, Darion Hutchinson, Mariah Weddle and Marlena Muszak. For German, she ends her tenure at UIndy as on of the most prolific scorers in program history, ranking ninth on the UIndy all-time scoring list with 1,438 points.
