Late inning heroics push Greyhounds to Saturday sweep of Lake Erie

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound baseball team used some late inning magic to notch a pair of wins over Lake Erie College on Saturday at Greyhound Park, running their winning streak to six games overall.

UIndy erased a pair of two-run deficits in game one before walking off with a 5-4 win in extra innings. In game two, the Hounds erased a 3-0 Storm lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, which was all they needed in a 4-3 victory to improve to 7-2 on the year.

GAME ONE: Lake Erie 4 – UIndy 5 (8 inn.)

The Storm wasted no time jumping on UIndy starter Jake Shaw, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first when Louie Peterlin belted a two-out double to deep center field that brought runners home from the corners.

Shaw would settle down after a rocky first inning, but the Greyhound bats would struggle to get going on a chilly day. After going hitless in the first two innings, UIndy got on the board in the third inning when Devon Hensley drew a leadoff walk and came in to score two batters later on Colin Hawk's double to the left center field alley.

UIndy got back to even in the bottom of the sixth with a combination of plate discipline and timely hitting. With runners on first and second following a pair of walks, Joe Trennepohl found a hole on the left side of the infield that scored Brady Thomas from second to tie the game. UIndy loaded the bases later in the inning, but couldn't push a run across.

The Hounds had a golden opportunity to walk off in the bottom of the seventh, but with the bases loaded Lake Erie reliever Michael Stryffeler induced an inning-ending double play ball to keep it a 2-2 game and send it to extras.

With two outs in the eighth, the Storm appeared to take the lead for good, getting a pair of two out RBI singles from Rees Rua and Kody Bledsoe to make it a 4-2 game.

UIndy started their rally in the bottom of the inning with a triple off the bat of Trennepohl to lead off. Alex Ritchie followed by reaching on an error and stealing second to bring the winning run to the plate. Macy Holdsworth cut the lead to 4-3 with an RBI ground out that scored Trennepohl and two batters later, UIndy tied the game on an Anthony Asalon single to left.

Asalon would steal second and following a walk to Hawk, Thomas ended the game with a base knock through the right side that brought Asalon in to complete the comeback.

Shaw moved to 2-1 on the year after giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits while fanning 10 Storm batters in a complete game effort.

GAME TWO: Lake Erie 3 – Uindy 4

Both UIndy starter Connor Mailloux and Lake Erie starter Brian Bullock tossed up donuts in the first two frames, but the Storm would strike first once again with the tandem of Rua and Bledsoe doing the damage, driving in a run each in the top of the third to make it 2-0.

Lake Erie tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, getting back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before an RBI groundout from Nigel Williams made it 3-0.

UIndy managed five hits in the first four innings, but stranded all five base runners. That changed in bottom of the fifth when Hawk stepped to the dish with one down and two runners on and belted a no-doubter that easily cleared the left field fence to tie the game.

The Hounds got the eventual go-ahead run in less conventional fashion later in the inning. Thomas followed Hawk's blast with a double and advanced to third on a Storm Joop groundout. The next batter was Kyle Orloff, who drew a four pitch walk and proceeded to head for second when he got to first base. Orloff was chased back to the bag, but not before Thomas broke for home and beat a throw with a head first slide to make it a 4-3 game.

After Mailloux kept the Storm silent in the sixth, he turned it over to Dylan Stutsman in the final inning. Stutsman allowed a leadoff single but followed it up with a strikeout and a game-ending double play ball to earn his third save of the year.

Mailloux (1-1) needed just 71 pitchers to get through six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.

The two teams wrap up their four-game set in Indianapolis with a nine-inning contest on Sunday. First pitch from Greyhound Park is set for noon.
