INDIANAPOLIS – For the second day and third straight game, the University of Indianapolis baseball team headed into the late innings needing a rally to keep their winning streak alive.
Â
Just as they did twice on Saturday, the Greyhounds found a way to overcome a late deficit with a four-run eighth inning to pick up a 12-11 win over Lake Erie, completing a four-game sweep of the Storm. The win is the seventh in a row for the Greyhounds, who moved to 8-2 on the year.
Â
Freshman
Kyle Orloff drove in three runs and had three hits, including the game-tying two run home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Joe Trennepohl and
Colin Hawk each drove in a pair of runs and
Brady Thomas scored three times for UIndy.
Â
The Storm plated a run in the top of the first off UIndy starter
Michael Schalasky, but UIndy answered with three in the bottom of the inning. After
Anthony Asalon reached on an infield single, Hawk cracked his second home run of the year over the left field wall. UIndy added another run later in the inning when
Storm Joop doubled to deep center, scoring Thomas from first.
Â
Lake Erie would answer with three runs of their own in the top of the second, but would give the lead right back to UIndy in the bottom of the third. With one down in the inning, Trennepohl tied the game with an RBI single before
Trevor Forde put the Hounds back in the lead with a single of his own to make it a 5-4 game.
Â
But once again, the lead wouldn't hold as Lake Erie got the tying run in the next trip to the plate, chasing Schalasky from the game in the process. UIndy grabbed the lead right back in their half of the frame, getting RBI singles from Orloff and Trennepohl and adding another on a wild pitch to make it 8-5 Greyhounds.
Â
Lake Erie cut the Greyhound lead to one with two runs in their half of the fifth before getting one run in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a 10-8 lead.
Â
Down by a pair in the eighth for a second straight day, UIndy answered in a big way early in the bottom of the inning. With
Blake Richardson on first and one out, Orloff stepped to the plate and launched the first pitch he saw from Michael Poole over the left field wall to tie the game.
Â
Trennepohl followed that up with a double and came in to score one batter later on
Dylan Jones' perfectly placed double down the left field line that gave UIndy an 11-10 lead. Jones came in to score later in the inning on Asalon's RBI single to center, giving the Greyhounds a much needed insurance run.
Â
The extra run proved to be valuable, as the Storm got a run back with one in the ninth on a fielder's choice off UIndy closer
Dylan Stutsman. With a runner on first and two down, Stutsman induced a ground ball to short that Hawk flipped to second to end the game.
Â
In his first career start, Schalasky allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Nick Lonergan earned the win after allowing one unearned run in his first appearance of the year. Stutsman picked up a save for the third straight day, giving him four on the year.
Â
UIndy looks to keep their winning streak going on Friday, Mar. 11, when they welcome GLVC West Division foe Quincy to Greyhound Park. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
